Wayne Perkins: did you know who he was?
Posted by: Thricenay ()

When Black And Blue came out in 1976, featuring Wayne Perkins as one of the lead guitarists, was his name familiar to you?

From Perkins' wiki page, it seems that Eric Clapton recommended him to the Stones. I also note that he played on Monkey Grip. Did he have much of a reputation? Had he already been raved about in American rock circles? Or was he a complete wild card, an unknown?

What's your recollection?

Well, yes, this thread is mainly aimed at older readers. Perhaps I should have made that clear at the beginning.

I was 18-and had not heard of Perkins or Mandel. To the general rock fan, both were not well known names.

But I was well acquainted with that Wood fella by that time.

...I recently found out he did many overdubs for "Catch a Fire" (1973), the first Wailers-album on Island Records, too.
He explained he nevere EVER had heard reggaemusic before, and that he simply didn't know what to make of it nor do with it.
So he just added some country-licks, as he was/is famous for...

He simply nailed the lead in "Worried About You" I considered it one of the best solos EVER!

I would have been 19 -- Perkins no, but (even though you didn't ask) I owned most of Harvey Mandel's solo albums and knew him from Canned Heat. Particularly his LP "Baby Batter" got me into him.

I didn't ask about Mandel, but I must say I like his solo on Hot Stuff. Doesn't sound like any of the Canned Heat I've ever heard, though.

If I am not mistaken,Honestman opened a thread -before he got banned-about Wayne Perkins but I can't find it anymore by using the search button on IORR.

Cool pic of him & Keith here :

Thanks for the pic. It's funny, I always imagined him with an Afro and a moustache. Probably because there was a cricketer in England with a similar-ish name back then (Wayne Larkins), and that's what he looked like.

Never heard of Wayne Perkins back in 1976 when I was 18. To be honest at first I though that he was perhaps related to Carl Perkins!

Certainly is. Not sure why I love so much but I always have, Never heard of Wayne before B&B and, to be honest, nor since.

I remember at the time it was actually announced on the radio that the Stones had selected Perkins as their new guitarist. That was the first I ever heard his name, but someone definitely jumped the gun. It does show, however, that they must have been seriously considering him at some point before Mr. Wood got the nod.

I think he also played with John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers. He would have been a fine replacement for Mick Taylor. Sounds alot like Mick Taylor on Hand of Fate.

yeah, they ended up putting out those two bad albums, some girls and tattoo you and those non-event tours in 78,81 and 82.it really ended the band having ronnie.what ever happened to the rolling stones anyway, have any of you heard anything from them since then?

Perkins played guitar on this 80s track from Delbert McClinton. Takes a little while to get going, so dont give up too quickly.

Event versus music.
Make your choice.
