Here is one that just hits to close for home and I haven't listened to it in a few years; I didn't dare listen to it as I posted it here sad smiley. . .

Yellow Ledbetter is more of a tearjerker.

Yup thats another one, good call. But for me, nothing is more closer to the heart than Come Back.

Tatters, you're on a roll.
The Midnight Cowboy main theme is the saddest movie songs ever. When they're on the bus, and Joe realizes Rizzo, his only friend, has just died, just kills me.

Fire and Rain
Easy to Be Hard
First Time Ever I saw Your Face
If You could REad My Mind
Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying
Wouldn't It Be Nice
God Only Knows
Vincent
What Becomes of the Broken-Hearted
and so many more from my childhood.

As an adult:
Springsteen's "The Ties That Bind", one of the best lost love songs ever.

Whenever I think of the Beach Boys and sad songs. I always think of Don't Worry Baby. Ever since a DJ who lost his wife in a car crash, came back on the air and made that the first song he palyed and dedicated it to his wife. To this day I can't listen to it without getting a little teary eyed.

"Warmth Of The Sun" is another one. Brian said he and Mike wrote that the evening of the day JFK got shot. "My love's like the warmth of the sun, it won't ever die".

stupidguy, "Wouldn't It Be Nice" makes you sad?! That's been my favorite song of all time since childhood, I can still listen to it over and over again.

Actually, "Emma" by Hot Chocolate is a sad and haunting song, because of the grim subject matter (suicide). Also "Ain't No Sunshine" by Bill Withers, "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" by the Bee Gees and "It's Too Late" by Carole King, for the heavy atmosphere. And "Riders on the Storm" by the Doors because it was the last song Jim Morrison ever recorded.

Come to think of it, the Shangri-la's "I Can Never Go Home Anymore" brings tears to my eyes too. Her mama dies! And the girl made her so sad beforehand by running off with a boy that mama didn't approve of.

I agree that Wouldn't It Be Nice is a sad song, but like virtually all of the BBs best songs, its more bitter sweet. The same song can make me feel super joyfull, or melancolic - often at the same time. Perhaps that's the genius of Brian Wilson.

As for Stones songs, Time Waits for No One, such haunting, beautiful song, but i can hardly bare to play it cause it brings out them sad goosebumps.

I start crying when I even hear the title of that song.

Yeah, exactly....it's about the hopes and dreams of youth or innocence, only to discover the world is not fair or whatever. That's what it is to me. It could be a song of unrealized hopes and yet still, there is a joyful innocence to it, like you can't give it up, and yet you know its not going to happen.
That is the genius of Brian Wilson. Plus, the melodies, the harmonies, the chord changes and minor 7s....its sublime.

And Claire,, "Wouldn't It Be Nice" is also my favorite song of all time. Its perfect, the most perfect song ever written.

Ava Maria, The Beach Boys' " God Only Knows", Lennon's " War Is Over-If You Want It', Roxy Music's "Slave To Love" and Simon and Garfunkel's " Bridge Over Troubled Waters".
