Here is one that just hits to close for home and I haven't listened to it in a few years; I didn't dare listen to it as I posted it here . . .
Whenever I think of the Beach Boys and sad songs. I always think of Don't Worry Baby. Ever since a DJ who lost his wife in a car crash, came back on the air and made that the first song he palyed and dedicated it to his wife. To this day I can't listen to it without getting a little teary eyed.Quote

Surprised no one mentioned this one.

stupidguy, "Wouldn't It Be Nice" makes you sad?! That's been my favorite song of all time since childhood, I can still listen to it over and over again.
Actually, "Emma" by Hot Chocolate is a sad and haunting song, because of the grim subject matter (suicide). Also "Ain't No Sunshine" by Bill Withers, "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" by the Bee Gees and "It's Too Late" by Carole King, for the heavy atmosphere. And "Riders on the Storm" by the Doors because it was the last song Jim Morrison ever recorded.
Come to think of it, the Shangri-la's "I Can Never Go Home Anymore" brings tears to my eyes too. Her mama dies! And the girl made her so sad beforehand by running off with a boy that mama didn't approve of.

I agree that Wouldn't It Be Nice is a sad song, but like virtually all of the BBs best songs, its more bitter sweet. The same song can make me feel super joyfull, or melancolic - often at the same time. Perhaps that's the genius of Brian Wilson.Quote
Yeah, exactly....it's about the hopes and dreams of youth or innocence, only to discover the world is not fair or whatever. That's what it is to me. It could be a song of unrealized hopes and yet still, there is a joyful innocence to it, like you can't give it up, and yet you know its not going to happen.
That is the genius of Brian Wilson. Plus, the melodies, the harmonies, the chord changes and minor 7s....its sublime.
And Claire,, "Wouldn't It Be Nice" is also my favorite song of all time. Its perfect, the most perfect song ever written.
