Mick's Best Vocal Performances
Posted by: Naturalust ()
Date: January 16, 2015 22:46

Since the Sway thread has shown that there is considerable interest in Micks vocal treatment of certain songs, I think a dedicated thread is in order.

Mostly to discuss the songs where he really nails it but certainly open to all discussion of Mick's singing.

Personally my favorites are:

Let It Loose
Sway
Moonlight Mile
Loving Cup
Monkey Man
Gimme Shelter

He just had so much heart and soul on these ones, no surprise that they happen to be some of my favorite Stones songs..I realize that Mick's singing is a big part of it.

peace

Angie - because it shows how sensitive Mick is able to sing

Sympathy - Great how he builds up that song. In the beginning he sings very soft but in the last minutes he just screams it out thumbs up

Far away eyes - just love Mick's way of singing on the whole Some Girls album.

Laugh, I nearly died - Love the track and Mick's emotional vocal-performance - beautiful vibrato.

I know you might hate me, but I think MJ failed in choosing his profession – he could have become a great blues singer but ended up as rock star.
btw look at the songs mentioned above – there are not too many rock songs on those list, are there?

I thought this would be live "performances" not studio take # 8 overdubbed with studio take #16 ect. Of course it's harder to pick out a single version of a song they have done so many times but I offer up this one:

Let is Loose is quintessential Mick. All things I love about him as a singer. The grit, beauty, sensitivity, and blues/gospel roots he so loves comes through on this epic tour de force.

Beast of Burden is an amazing performance as well. Mick's beautiful soul approach to a rock song works so well.

Fingerprint File is the dramatic Mick making a point with out the often later years sarcasm.

Backstreet Girl is a wonderfully vulnerable performance that has such depth from such a young man. It is haunting and yearning. Beautiful.

You Can't Always Get What You Want. Another perfect soul gospel rock performance from the master. Sublime.

Sympathy for the Devil. What more needs to be said.

Memo From Turner- what a gut bucket grit fest with beautiful imagery and song with a almost rap like lilt that demonstrates how hypnotically raunchy Mick can be. Very punk funk.

Out of Control (1998 live) and most songs on Stripped are very well performed by Sir Mick.

Mick's brilliant at using his voice as a rhythm instrument.

And he's done some mighty fine work as a backup singer too -
hark to his brilliantly understated work on Little T&A, for example,
and his guest spots on Am I Groovin You and Nothing But the Wheel
