Stones Tribute Band - Suggestions
Posted by: banditpanda ()
Date: February 11, 2015 03:57

Howdy. As I may have mentioned before I am putting together a Stones tribute band and the first show I want to present is the Brussels show,( arguably the best) as it was presented, in its entirety. Now from that era I can go on to present Get Yer Ya Ya's Out and of course the Ladies & Gentlemen show. Many of you of course regard the Brussels performances as perhaps one of the best the boys have ever done. Now, unfortunately, I guess , for my next shows I have to get into the Ronnie Woods era. Would you mind giving me some suggestions as to which shows are very highly thought of which are available on DVD or CD, which I could consider learning and performing.
Thank you.
B.P.

If you're going into such detail as to learn the subtle differences between shows of the same general era and actually going to try to reproduce them note for note, you're going to lose the very thing that makes Stones music entertaining. My suggestion would be to learn the songs, try to get the sound and instrumentation close and then make 'em your own. But hey, I'm not much of a tribute band fan.....just seems like musical masturbation to replicate specific shows. peace

Detroit 1978, Atlantic City 1989, 7th Of July 1990, Paradisio 1995, Brixton 1995, Olympia 1995, O2 I 2012, MSG 2003, Toronto 1975, NYC (Hold On Tight) 1975 and El Mocambo 1977 should get you started.

IMO, Texas 1978 is every bit as good as the MTaylor shows, but MUCH more enjoyable to watch as there is good camera coverage all around and a great, fun, engaged vibe from the band, rather than the detached, Gods on Mt Olympus vibes of 72 & 73.

What do you mean by this:
"Now, unfortunately, I guess , for my next shows I have to get into the Ronnie Woods era." confused smiley

If you want to be in a tribute band, then just play the @#$%& songs and get used to the really old, tired and used-up groupies reliving their past. Hope you have the energy for the long haul.

yeah, I scratched my head at that as well. why disparage Ronnie, or is that what you were trying to do? no one has a gun to your head, if you don't like that era, then just don't do the songs.

Maybe he is the Chuck in the group and suddenly realised that he would be buried in work with songs from the Ronnie era...

Who said anything about note for note?I know what I'm doing. Yes I'll be enjoying myself but you know what ? I think the audience will be too.
And if we can get to 80% of the crescendo of JJF and SFM which ends the Brussels show then the audience will be going mad.
So thanks for your mean spirited advice but I for one don't want it or need it.
Thanks for nothing.

To Kurt. What I mean by that is as a Stones fan and guitarist I much prefer the Stones pre Ronnie Woods. That's all.
Kurt...not being a musician yourself you prolly won't understand but it's about playing & presenting the music you love and I don't mean on an Ipod.

Well some of those tours didn't vary the song list too much so multable dates like the one's posted by TooYough just means he like that tour. I liked the rundown for the Some Girls tour:

"Let It Rock"
"All Down the Line"
"Honky Tonk Women"
"Star Star"
"When the Whip Comes Down"
"Beast of Burden"
"Lies"
"Miss You"
"Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me)"
"Shattered"
"Respectable"
"Far Away Eyes"
"Love in Vain"
"Tumbling Dice"
"Happy"
"Sweet Little Sixteen"
"Brown Sugar"
"Jumpin' Jack Flash"
Encore: "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," "Street Fighting Man"
"Hound Dog" (Played Only In Lexington & Memphis)

I think you misunderstood his post completely. And your own post about the current lineup, that made the best-selling album in the band's history, baffled me a bit. You don't like playing Ronnie era-songs like Miss You, Beast Of Burden, She's So Cold and Start Me Up?

You asked so it's a bit out of line to be ribbing people for their opinions and comments. If you knew what you were doing, you likely wouldn't have had to ask. You want other people's opinions on which entire shows you are going to learn to play?

Well you complained when you only got 3, now you have over 100, I guess you'll have to decide for yourself which ones to learn. Sorry you might have to venture into the Ronnie area. Good luck...post a video if you want some real feedback.
peace

To my mind there is a difference between the song writing of Jagger/Richards and Ronnie Wood as a Rolling Stone. There are many many many Jagger/Richards songs that I love and want to play. I am trying to avoid a mish mash of Stones numbers and so am I hopeful about being able to present specific concerts in their entirety. I may not be able to avoid presenting a greatest hits segment.
The band lost so much with the departure of MT. Keef & Ronnie had to invent " guitar weaving " in order to cover up the fact that neither one of them could impact a song like MT did.
Again thanks for the contribution.

That's silly. I think you've totally misunderstood the concept of weaving as well. Some of the greatest songs in the Taylor era also has weaving (I Got The Blues, Hip Shake, SFTD live etc.).

Many of their greatest hits + their 3 best-selling studio albums came out in the Ronnie era.

A tribute band plays Stones music for the fans. Do you really think they don't wanna hear Start Me Up, Miss You, Beast Of Burden, Slave, Little T+A, Imagination, Memory Motel or Doom And Gloom?

Try to come up with something like this, and I guarantee that you'll have a happy crowd. It's from the Detroit show I recommended, btw:

They didn't invent it, been around for a long time, ancient art as Keith says. Some would say Brian and Keith did this as did hundreds of other guitarists. Keith is quoted as saying he intentionally tried to move away from the rhythm and lead structure the Stones had become with MT in the band. He was probably ahead of his time in doing so since long leads were becoming a bit tired and cliche in rock music and just about everyone eventually cut them down or out. peace

The definitive Stones Tribute Band should be able to reproduce exactly the most notorious Stones' screw up on stage. That should be written on their set list with a reference for every song to the original version - date and city - so the connoisseurs would very pleased.

I have a friend who plays guitar, he does that quite well, I mean on purpose. He reproduces a mistake from a bootleg "at the request"
