Re: OT: Kate Middleton and Prince William BAN BEER from Royal Wedding Reception Next Week

It's their wedding, so it's their choice. However, we maintain the right to be disdainful of that choice. Maybe their decision not to allow beer is more a reflection of their contemporary peer group, i.e., maybe Kate and Willie hang with a bunch of bad drunks and want to minimize the potential tabloid frenzy caused by someone's drunken monkeyshines.

When I was a young man under the influence of the Clash, I took great offense at the notion that this family got to live as royalty solely as a result of the circumstances of their lineage. But my position has evolved over time.

Windsor, Inc. is essentially an industry unto itself. I figure that the income that it generates in terms of tourism, souvenirs, tabloid sales, etc. probably more than pays for whatever it costs "to keep [them] in the luxury." And, since the royals hardly have any real power in terms of British national affairs, they're essentially harmless relics.

I hear you AB they do generate money which can be taxed even if they themselves pay no taxes. Royals are good for tourism. They're kind of like Madame Tussuad's but with blood plasma, a pulse, and an occasional scandal.

I agree with you there ab...................especially as I got older and worked up in London town.Places all over the U.K with royal connections profit from tourism. These places are full of tourists all year round, and what are they here for.The sights that are connected with royalty going back to the Tower of London etc. and anything with a faint connection to royalty.I have actually met americans and japanese tourists in pubs called The Queen Victoria,Kings Arms,The Royal Charter,Prince of Wales etc. that have visited the place 'cos they think it has got a royal connection. It is big business to U.K.Plc. and deservedly so.I am not a royalist by any means 'cos I can't stick the hereditory Lords,Barons etc and the lower divisions like Prince Andrew and Edward, their offspring and countless other minor royals who live off the state. They should get a job. smoking smiley

It's the first Royal Wedding of that level in history to which an American President was not invited. England obviously hasn't been thrilled with Obama's anti-England stance.

Not true. How many do you think were invited in the era before air travel?

Plus, its not a state occasion as he's not the heir to the throne, so it's actually a 'minor' royal wedding if anything. There's no precedent for it.

Thats obviously why he's coming on a state visit next month then..

I do hope President Obama sends a gift. Perhaps an Ipod with his speeches on it? Or an autographed copy of Dreams of my Father? A bust of Churchill?

I have no idea why someone who's not invited to the event nor is anywhere near related to any of the invited guests cares this much about what they allow or ban at the wedding. Unless you actually work for a beer company I cannot see how this should even be a topic of conversation--even a thread.

Because it's on TV nonstop in the states and I can frankly care less about the Royal Family and that whole, what some people call, circus... actually, it's irritating to see people that have done nothing exceptional in their lives put up on this giant pedestal and almost/basically worshipped. At least Princess Diana had that thing against land mines, she tried to do some good with her fame, have some influence on something - a positive movement (and good for her, "Only the good die young". Shame she's gone).

Banning beer seems like such a snob thing to do, since when does William THINK he even has a right (not that anyone does) to be a snob... he's just some guy and she's just some girl... it's like the reality shows on TV in the states. They make typical, regular people famous, I don't like those or watch them either. The thing is the US media is into this Royal wedding stuff way too deep... I'm much more interested in "Real News" like the state of our economy or how things are going in Japan (after all the tragedy they've been hit with)... things going on in the Arabic countries like Syria and Yemen. Instead it's 24/7 silly wedding. It 's just my tiny opinion, we're not a dictatorship yet are we?....

It's hardly a big deal if the royal family deems it as inappropriate. Who cares? It's their choice to label things however they want.

You like beer. The Royal Family doesn't. What exactly is the point here?

I wonder what Dennis Potter or Harold Pinter would have said about this degenerated soap. Are there any intellectuals left in England? Two hundred years after the French Revolution and this still goes on?

Considring the source for this is the Mirror anyway I wouldn't count on it being a credible source to begin with. As for teh wedding itself.Hey it's a nice story and better than constantly being bomabarded with bad news all the time. We can always use a feel good story.

Very well, you want worse, here goes: celebrity sex tapes you'd least want to watch, e.g., Susan Boyle and Patten Oswalt.

The impression America gave us Brits in the '60's, was that the Kennedy clan were taken as the nearest thing to royalty over there. Now there is no one.You only gotta watch breakfast tv here, and our reporters are talking to the anchor men/women for NBC,ABC,Fox etc. about the occasion. They have earmarked and paid for all the best positions in London. They are positively drooling and gushing over it all.Makes our guys and gals look quite relaxed and cool about the occasion. smoking smileyeye rolling smileysmoking smiley
