Peru Bravo - Funk, Soul & Psych from Peru's Radical Decade

‘Peru Bravo’ is the second compilation from Tiger’s Milk Records to be released on October 6th
It tells the story of a fleeting subculture of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, when Peru’s capital, Lima, nurtured a culture of young bands full of ideas and energy despite the country’s instability under the oppressive rule of General Juan Velasco Alvarado.

‘Peru Bravo’ features fifteen tracks covering Peru’s underground funk, soul and psych scene between 1968 and 1974 (the reign of Velasco) including diverse reinterpretations of Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Hey Joe’, The Meter’s ‘Cissy Strut’ and Steppenwolf’s ‘Sookie Sookie’ (the latter covered by Los Texao - pictured at top of post).

Also included is The Mad’s ‘Aouh Aouh’. The Mad’s story would see them inscribe a tangent upon the UK’s own emerging counterculture. From their beginnings performing covers of The Kinks before penning their own songs, a chance meeting with a holidaying Mick Jagger in 1969 would lead to The Rolling Stones’ manager at the time, Marshall Chess, inviting the band to the UK to make use of the Stones’ extensive facilities.

Escaping the troubled Peru for swinging hip London, the band changed their name to Molesto, eventually recording a demo at Mick Jagger’s castle at Stargroves, using The Rolling Stones’ portable truck studio with wires running to the castles rooms. The same set up the Stones had used to record ‘Sticky Fingers’, and Led Zeppelin had used to record their third and fourth albums. Despite some live success on the London scene at the turn of the ‘70s, the band would go their separate ways by 1973. As if they hadn’t encountered enough British rock n’ roll royalty, it was at this point that band member Alex Ventura befriended a young Freddie Mercury and Roger Taylor, his fellow stallholders whilst selling clothes on Kensington Market.
