The Exile outtakes you compiled & posted a year or so ago is better than a lot of the bootlegs out there.

Greetings from the Jersey Shore.

This new box set from Wonder Land Records presents the Stones Exile On Main St. Revisited- Mick Taylor Years and it is a bit of a surprise. Let's face it, this label has been openly criticized for many a release of dubious quality and that featured mistakes easy to be avoided with a little more care, let alone the subject most of the times quite redundant. This time winds have changed and we are happy to report it, this Exile box is full of goodies. The design and artwork is still the same with lots of discs wrapped in plastic bags and the usual booklet while this time there is no 3D cover. But it is the content that matters and so let's start reviewing disc by disc. Disc One starts with a copy of the NME flexi that came out in 1972 presenting excerpts from the forthcoming album introduced by Jagger at his piano and is then followed by a copy of Exile On Main Street coming from a pristine Atlantic/Toshiba vinyl from Japan. From the booklet: 'You thought you had the definitive version with Virgin 1994 re-release or 2010 Promotone special anniversary edition? Think again! With this package you get the ultimate mix of the original album: this copy id one of the original pressing from Japan with every song remastered separately with new fades faithful to the original as much as possible; minor equalizing to certain titles to balance them out; songs like "Sweet Black Angel" and "Torn And Frayed" get a new bass mix because they lacked the same amount of bass as other titles, on the other hand songs like "Loving Cup" and "Tumbling Dice" had their bass mixed down due to the fact that these songs were worked on more because of their status as potential singles and so for radio broadcasts : now the bass as it is on the album is boomy and actually distorts almost the sound spectrum. All is now corrected within this compilation, especially on "Sweet Virginia" , "Casino Boogie" and "Loving Cup" where it is possible to hear clearly the steel kettle drum in the final mix and "Happy", where you can hear the master tape wrinkles on the second chorus and that brings a fresh new power to the songs without disturbing the original feeling of Exile. And I must add that it is really like that, I don't remember having had so much pleasure listening to any other version of Exile so far! It is really like listening to the original vinyl album and the limited surface noise (for instance at the beginning of "Let It Loose") increase that impression, but never the bass has been so deep and at the same time positioned in the right place without pushing too much the other instruments down; and listen to the chorus and brass on many songs ("Tumbling Dice" and "Let It Loose" again) to just appreciate the wide open spectrum this music has re-gained with this mix. Disc Two opens with a radio promo featuring Jagger on piano playing Exile On Main Street Blues (without excerpts), followed by the alternate versions released with the fall 2009 Exile reworked version, well known outtakes and official tracks ("All Down The Line" mono mix and "Get A Line On You" from Leon Russell's album). Disc 3 presents the famous 1972 Lost Live Album, on October 7th 1972 some overdubs were made for the supposedly forthcoming live album that never happened because of problems with Abkco. Some 8 mono songs surfaced first on vinyl bootleg Keep Your Motor Running and some years after in stereo on Very Ancient Thank You and later on VGP's Keep Your Motor Running the best possible source; this disc has some tracks coming from this but other missing ("Happy","All Down The Line","Uptight-Satisfaction") and some songs that seem to come from Houston both shows ("Midnight Rambler" and "Street Fighting Man") all however in excellent sound. Disc Four presents the 2nd show from Los Angeles Western Forum that was originally released on vinyl by King Snake as Get Your Rocks Off (without "Honky Tonk Women") and by Mushroom Rec.including that song and also by TMOQ in 8 different versions. On compact it was released by IMP as Live at the Forum 1972 2 cds, then by VGP as Get Your Rocks Off in a slightly better shape and later by Exile as The Greatest Western Show that featured the 1st concert as well; on this release there is the usual mono audience recording with "Honky Tonk Women" that was played as encore. Another live concert is on Disc Five and it is the well known Tarrant County Ft.Worth 2nd show that has been released so many times (just some titles: Ain't No Angel On Main Street, Touring Party 1972, Sweet Black Angel, Brown Sugar, Ft.Worth Express, Ft.Worth Special, How's Your Lungs, Mick Taylor We Miss You, All Across your Town, American Tour 1972, An American Affair, Beware of Tumbling Dice, Live USA, Love in Vain, Rare Little Rock n Rollers, Very Ancient Thanks You Kindly, Plug In,Flush Out, Ahmet Ertegun Thank You Kindly, Dragon Slayers, A Few Hearts Broken,A Few Strings Missing, Whip's Crack and Tiger's Snarl, A Hard Shot To The Body, Lonestar Shooters, The Return of the Exiles etc.) It was also reviewed recently because it has being released by For Fans Only . This version is a nice one anyway with the full show in soundboard quality. Disc 6 has the Norfolk show in the usual mono audience source. From Disc 7 onwards we get many Taylor cds that have at times being available as cdr but not as silver pressed ones. The first one has tracks from what was supposed to be Taylor's second album but never was officially released, coming out of seclusion earlier this year on a no label disc called Special that gets its name from the first song (see that review for details). It is followed by the Stones original 1970 version of the instrumental "Leather Jacket" and then Taylor's remixed version from a promo vinyl single and then by three Exile tracks played with the Wentus Blues Band in 2005, this show was released by Pignose as Ventilator Blues. Discs 8 and 9 (that lasts just over 30 minutes) present another Taylor concert only previously available on cdr (Off The Board In Chicago) and it is Chicago 99 at the House of Blues, despite being a soundboard recording. This concert happened just 3 months after the release of A Stone's Throw, still the latest studio album from Mick Taylor to this day and features Max Middleton on keyboards, Robert Ahwai on second guitar, Jeff Allen on drums and Michael Bailey on bass. Disc 10 has the John Mayall & Bluesbreakers stop at St.Albans in late 2004 from the tour put together with Taylor as supporting musician. This concert was released in full by Trial on British Blues Nights 3 cdr set and the recording here comes from the end of the 2nd disc and the whole 3rd disc (some problems on "Pretty Woman"). The last 2 audio discs have the Taylor concert in Lille from 2009 and this is the first time this recording has surfaced since it wasn't circulating between collectors in any form. The first DVD is interesting since presents all 3 promo videos from the Exile reissue tracks released as singles ("Plundered My Soul" in 2 versions and "Following The River"), then we have "California" from John Mayall's 70th Birthday concert that was only available on the US blue ray version. What follows is a whole concert by Mick Taylor from Ochten 2006 with the presence of singer guitarists Erwin Nyhoff on "Time Waits For No One" one of the few live versions of this song ever heard; the disc ends with a short version of "Blind Willie McTell" with the Wentus Blues Band from Family Meeting, an official DVD that celebrated 20 years of the band.

The second DVD presents all 5 episodes of Jimmy Fallon Late Night during the week of 10th through 14th March 2010 when the expanded version of Exile On Main Street was promoted on NBC TV with Jagger and Richards cameo appearances; actually Keith Richards showed up in person on day 4 and Jagger on day 5 presenting the documentary Stones in Exile. Summing it all up this is an interesting box with plenty of interesting items and collectors may want to invest, they just need to go over the strange coupling of Exile era stuff with Mick Taylor's after Stones solo works.

I have it, and actually it is not bad at all. It is a bit strange with all the Mick Taylor stuff on it, but it is quite well put together. Good quality and it does not sound like MP3 copies. One of their better releases.
