Underrated gem

Just wonder why such a great song like "If you really want to be my friend" never has been played live or gotten more airplay, it has great singing, composing, guitar solo, arangement, whatever....

Because it's kind of a minor song in their canon. To do it right you'd have to have a top notch backup singing group and not the long in the tooth group they've had since 1989.

They have the Group to play it - it is just a matter of wanting to do it or not. Playing it some times and it would be a great succes.

Agreed! I love "If You Really Want to Be My Friend." I always thought of it as the Stones' tribute to the Philly Soul sound.

Blue Magic, who provide the background vocals, are beautiful. This group (Blue Magic) had a top-ten hit in the summer of 1974, a few months before "It's Only Rock 'n Roll" came out. The song was called "Sideshow":

Here's info about the Philly Soul sound (in 1975 Elton John had is own tribute to Philly Soul - "Philadelphia Freedom"):

Yes. It's also got a slightly countryish sound to it, but the back up chorus, and MT's guitar solo are fantastic. It's a great song, a very underrated gem. This is 'proper' love song, with no underlying sneer or cynicism.
I love those riffs going through the whole song, but I don't know what it is: organ? guitar with an effect?
anybody know?

I don't know. Why don't they play Casino Boogie and a million other songs better than IYRWTBMF?

Although a very good song, not a 'top choice' for me either.

If I'm grabbing IORR to play it's not because of IYRWTBMF...in fact I think only Short & Curlies would score lower on that album for me.

Having said that, I certainly don't skip it.

pretty sure that is a leslie on the guitar; like on LIL.
I have always loved IYRWTBMF, and never understood why it wasn't one of our big cult favorites. The lead vocal by Jagger is a top performance. And I love how it is a proper 'chord' song; not a riff per se. But more than anything I love, musically, when it slides into the bridge (twice) "people tell me you were a vulture..." and then into "but you got a little charm around you". I just love that part.
I read that the BU vox by Blue Magic was actually o/d very late in the game.

The vocal is overdone.

On much of that album, but especially on this track, they are trying to be something else.

The jagger/ricahrd team had lost its natural muse - if it was even much of a team at this time.

Not sorry.

Yes! And how that chorus softens with the minor chords and Mick's voice....
It's a 'proper' song isn't it?

Some Stones fans say songs like this were not Stones[/i, that Mick and Keith were losing their grit or whatever...
I think with Keith out of commission during much of this period, Jagger was exploring as a songwriter, he was writing songs, not just relying on a riff or hook or groove.
This is what he tried to do more of with his solo stuff, sometimes successfully and often not.
In fact, I always saw this period as a precursor to Mick's solo material..where he was writing primarily on his own.
DOn't get me wrong, I love the return to groove in Some Girls and beyond...
Which is why songs like IYRWTBMF is such a gem,..they capture a moment in the Stones' history. There was never anything like it before or since.

I agree with your analysis in italics.

Mick J exploring as main creator, with Taylor as his main collaborator.

Yes, precursor to solo work 'ethic' - he was stil tied into Stones 'marriage' at the time.

Each to his/her own.

I disagree with you about the song being a gem - I'd take a lot, if not virtually al, of his solo work in preference.

Good Stones albums have the Mick/Keith partnership. This is more in evidence on B&B and related session work - Slave - fledgling Start Me Up, etc

IORR being the first 'Designer' stones' album.

Deliberately aimed by marketeer Mick at a younger Bowie/glam audience.

TWFNO is the knock-out exception, imo. Transcendent and resplendent.

Timeless!

I agree. Plus they are on their last touring legs so I really don't see them ripping out anything that's obscure. I know they did with "Silver train" in Japan but really think that was a one off. I think the thing that puts me off this song is the repeating backing vocals. Actually come to think of it I think it's just the production of the whole arrangement. Too long, dated of the time sounds, could have done with a killer chorus and not asking a hundred times the title. Hey but I love IYCRM, the Temps cover and S&C and they seem to cop a bagging round these parts.
Keith may have been awol for much of this album but his guitar work on the title track is enough for me to forgive him. The opening of IORR (song) is the coolest start to any song in history.

This is where many fans abandoned the band because they were not hard enough. The metal fans totally gave up on the band. The true Stones fan understands the beauty of this album .
