A great EP to release and let the public know the Stones are still around (and have about 10 stinkers in the tank ready to go).

Let me put it this way - in the early 90's, both Jagger and Richards still "had it" - the ability to write great songs with "cassic" potential.

But, unfortunately and somehow mysteriously, their great songwriting form did not transform into a great new Stones album.

Sometimes I wonder why...

Because they'd lost the personal chemistry thang.

They had some left-overs that they made into an album in order to go on tour and keep RS plc going.

I think they still both dig doing itlive - but as for recording great stuff - they'd need to get off on each other personally/socially.

The good thing about Voodoo Tour was that it did genearte a 'togetherness' factor which then did motivate them to go into the studio and give their work to a band project and not personal ones.

That's why Bridges and its subsequent tour(s) was more authentic and happening....
....

... wish they could have taken that forward ... without Jagger reverting to a solo project and then the first band tour with nothing new to offer - 'just for the sake of it'

Voodoo Lounge was great as is. Plenty of straight forward rockers. Bridges doesn't even compare.

Ronnie had the best solo album of the three of them, imo.

Bridges compares and contrasts very well - because they were taking risks - which Voodoo Yawn doesn't.

Agree with Powderman about Ronnie's great offering,(only that he shouldn't have tried to resurrect Breathe On Me)

Agreed! He sounded like he suffered from a triple larynghitis on that one smiling smiley

I don't think that "taking risks" is the reason why Bridges compares so well - for my taste, it simply has better songs than Voodoo Lounge which suffered from the fact that the main songwriting team kept the best material for their solo efforts. Voodoo Lounge simply has too many second-rate b-side (at best) material, songs that sounded "quite ok" but would not have passed quality control in the past.

Totally agree about better compositions - but it is fair to say that on Bridges Jagger is experimenting and making the Stones sound 'current' on some tracks - whereas Voodoo is so applallingky (imo) retro. Moon Is Up being the most venturesome track. Thru and Thru deserves mention for brave effort - but I still think it's a Turkey (gobble, gobble). On Bridges, by comparison we have THREE stellar knock-out Keith Tunes. I find Bridges to be just a very balanced and varied work - their latter day Exile in terms of stylistic variation/eclectic mix. The varied bass playing helped a lot too - less of DJones' stylistic monotony.

Wish I'd heard a live Lowdown.

Had they peeled off three tracks or so, and worked a little more on a couple of more songs (FTS and OOC), the album could have been great, imo.
