Re: Stones at the 2012 London Olympic Games a no-go

I'm pretty sure the levy running dry was a reference to Ronnie Wood's lifelong struggle with impotency (see "Come to Realise"). Some may argue that Wood wasn't important enough at the time to earn a reference in the song, but McLean was doubtless aware of Ronnie bi-locating in July 1969 when he strolled through Hyde Park and said hello to the Stones on there way up to the stage (and promised he'd be up there with them one day) while simultaneously playing a show in the States with The Jeff Beck Group. As a consequence of his status as an Adept of the Mystic Arts, I believe Ronnie is also the Holy Ghost that McLean sings of.

The selection of whiskey and rye is, sadly, for rhyming purposes only but less shameful than say Styx's "On board I'm the Captain / So climb aboard."

Tomorrow we should discuss the hidden meaning in The Righteous Brothers' 1974 comeback hit "Rock 'n' Roll Heaven" and whether or not Bobby Hatfield should be added to the list of dead celebrities when Bill Medley sings the song in concert and whether he should now be officially billed as The Righteous Brother.

After that we can discuss how Micky Dolenz's "Randy Scouse Git" was a reference to Brian Jones and prove conclusively that "Puff the Magic Dragon" was a scandalous expose of child sex slavery.

SCL, work is for douche bags, but I do believe Neil Young was responsible for shooting down Lynyrd Skynyrd's plane in retaliation for "Sweet Home Alabama."

i always suspected foul play there. interesting theory.

any late-breaking conspiracy developments on the ill-timed passing of sonny bono? heard it was a very overcast day that day in California, except for sonny on one tree. always been suspicious about that....

The tree was located on a grassy knoll (beneath the snow, that is). Coincidence? Possibly.

Others claim Sonny mistook the pine tree for Cher in one of her freaky Gene Simmons outfits. That's certainly plausible.

Either way his death was in the public domain and that was fitting.

I fear that no Olympics = no tour. This could be the end.

Not if you've already heard it 100 times.

A 30 second mash up of five - seven songs isn't something I see Mick willing to do. And that is generally speaking what the Olympic committee wants. I'm glad they aren't doing it.

I'd rather see them do a big show right before the Olympics or right after. Just because they aren't doing the official opening doesn't mean there is no tour.

Maybe if they asked Mick to Lip-Sync with hired session musicians instead of the Stones? Or possibly Mick & Dave Stewart could lip-sync new music together? Have we heard if the committee has tried to reach, Charlie, Ronnie, Bill & Mick T? Possibly they'd be willing to show up?

Peace,
Mr DJA

I dont think the IOC are going to be stuck for potential performers, somehow.

I also think they'll ideally be looking at performers who are considerably younger and healthier looking than a group of near 70-somethings.

Don't misunderstand me, but Macca or Elton John would be the more likely ones to do that kind of arrangement with their more easy going songs known all over the world.

Macca's not from anywhere near London though, whereas Reg is (more or less).

If they have a rock/pop presence at the Olympics, I'd imagine it'll consist of short appearances by several acts. It most certainly WONT just be 'veteran' performers. At the closing ceremony in Beijing, when China handed the games to the London delegation, they marked it with performances which featured Leona Lewis as well as Jimmy Page.

You know there's nothing wrong with this thread that a good analysis of "American Pie" wouldn't cure.
