The Circus were live, but a set-up.
The last live performance before public, were the NME concert.

Actually, wouldn't it be the David Frost appearance (Frost on Saturday) from November 30 where they debuted Sympathy For The Devil? Though it was only a mime, it was nonetheless an "appearance" before the public and therefore a "performance" of sorts, as the host notes, it's "....the first performance of the Rolling Stones by the Rolling Stones in a television studio for over a year"....

Live appearances aside, when was his last appearance, regardless of living status?

Turning To Gold
For purposes of this thread, I am interested in the last time Brian appeared and played in a Rolling Stones live concert where people (the public) were sold tickets and paid to see them perform.
Would that mean I'm in the Greece 1967 camp? What was the date on that?
Or were they on the bill at the NME show, and people paid to see them?
Did they sell any tickets to the R&R Circus, or was it just invited guests?

They were on the bill for the NME show (for which people paid for tickets), but so were a lot of other bands.

The stones weren't advertsised etc for 1968 NME show, it was a surprise appearance no?

I seem to remember knowing about it in advance, but that could just mean I knew in advance they'd be on the telecast (I wasn't at the show), so you could be right. Too long ago to be sure!
Edit: Although my diary shows that I was wildly excited by this TV appearance, it's not clear on whether it was a surprise or not. (It does note that after the show Mick was interviewed by the ghastly Tony Blackburn and asked about the busts etc. "Oh that was last year--it's 1968 now! Somebody was trying to make me remember it and I couldn't remember it. It was very weird." He also said he'd like to do a film with Marianne "when we're very old." Three days after this was broadcast Brian was arrested again. "Great idiot!" says my diary.)
