....about early band autographs being not entirely legitimate.

Bill Wyman, 2013: "We all learned to sign each other's signatures"

Didn't we all know this? I seem to remember Bill came clean years ago in one of his books. I'm sure Keith said it at some point, too.

I really never understood the fascination with someone's signature...

Did we? I've read Bill's books and this is the first I've heard of it. It only became a circulated story in music mags and news outlets this past June.

June 6: [www.rollingstone.com]

June 7: [www.gigwise.com]

June 7: [www.torontosun.com]

June 8: [www.classicrockmagazine.com]

June 8: OP link

June 11: [www.antimusic.com]

June 11: [www.krock1057.ca]

June 12: [ultimateclassicrock.com]

The story was circulated among other outlets when they picked up on a Q&A session he did with Rolling Stone this year:

There's a great letter [in the book that] you wrote to a fan in 1965. I was surprised you guys had the time to do that.
"I always tried to do that. All of us did. Actually, there's footage of us signing things in the dressing rooms. We all tried to do it. And there were stacks and stacks of autographed books, programs to be signed, and we just used to grab a bunch each and sign everybody's name. We all learned to sign each other's signatures (laughs). Except for Charlie. He wouldn't sign anything. But me, Keith, Mick and Brian all could sign each other's autographs. When I see them now for sale, I know that, you know, two of them are not theirs – originals and all that. But it was the only way to do it, because you couldn't pass this stuff around. You didn't have time. You were onstage in 10 minutes."

I got a letter from the Stones fan club back in 1964 or '65, signed by them all, and I knew even then that the chances of the signatures being real was at best 50/50, because we knew--somehow, I can't remember sources that far back--that the girls in the fan club signed for them and that they signed each others' autographs.

Interesting that on Pawn Stars a woman came in with a framed photograph of all five of the Stones. So they get a collector/handwriting expert to come in and he says they are all fake... the lady was devastated and was convinced they were real... the guy goes in and compares them to other samples showing they are fake. Yeah, it is weird the whole fascination with signatures! I admit I occasionally will get a deluxe book or item that is signed.

As I've always said, if you did not see it autographed, assume it's a forgery.

Here is a nice example:
All this autographs are done by Keith's hand. Very easy to see on the two 'love' words. Look also on the words 'Richards' and 'Wyman', both keith's handwritting.

Dear Bill;

Please go way. You are so bitter. You have had nothing good to say since 1993.

Sincerely yours

Dear Bill:

Please don't go away. You're the least full of s*&t of all of them. Your bitterness is somewhat warranted, and at least it's human. Hope you've had a good life since 1993, because the band has suffered since.

Cheers,
24FPS

Where will all this end? Next thing we'll be reading about is someone doubting the authenticity of that copy of Let It Bleed that was going on e-bay a few years ago for a couple of grand and which had been signed by all five band members. Including Brian.

On DAVID LETTERMAN years back, during a segment called Brushes with Greatness where audience members would tell Dave true (but usually incidental) encounters with famous people, one woman told of talking to Keith Richards at a tennis match (paraphrase from memory):

WOMAN: "I saw Keith Richards returning from the snack bar, so I went over and stopped him and asked for his autograph. He said, `Sure. Can you hold my hotdog?' [Which got a big laugh from the audience.] So I held his hotdog as he signed my program."
