ALS is so horrible and as far as I know it is heriditary too.If only they knew more about it. it is so sad, am so sorry to hear about your loss. Memento mori.

Sorry for the loss of your friend. I would guess by the Keith's library comment that your friend had a fondness for reading and books himself. Cherish his memories forever.
