Slim had talent, in spite of becoming a source of comedy material due to his TV commercials and odd musical/stylistic choices. A nice moment for Slim on was on "The Midnight Special," with an unctuously admiring Andy Kaufman.
I never heard of him before his late night cable TV commercials. Never heard of him after that. I had no idea he actually lived. He is never included in country music anthology CDs. And yet he sold 1.5 million of those TV greatest hits albums. Amazing.
Quote Elmo Lewis Didn't his TV ads claim he had "sold more records than Elvis or the Beatles"? Or was that Boxcar Willie?
No, I think it was "has had more number 1 hits than Elvis and The Beatles" combined--same goes for Boxcar Willie. I believe the same may also have been said for Roger Whittaker.
