Audience Members Pre-Occupied With Electronic Devices?... Quieter, Less Enthusiastic?

Even though I was holding the video recorder to the side (i.e., not watching the performance thru the viewfinder) so I could watch the real performance... I didn't want to dance or move around so that camera wouldn't shake; or sing or shout because that would spoil the recording; couldn't clap along with only one hand...

I'm going to leave the video recorder home on Friday... help make some more NOISE

They're not pre-occupied - they are occupied.

Doesn't make a difference. I play guitar, so I stare at the players.....I don't jump dance and act a fool, but don't mind if others do. Same for sporting events....I paid to watch. This is also why I could give two shites how much jumping and jogging Mick does, frankly he's a distraction to me. If the people around me aren't puking drunk, or loud and obnoxious, I don't care what they do.... They paid too.

Should be like golf tournaments where they do not allow phones... In L.A. I recorded 15-30 seconds of each song. That's all I can handle before I have to dance or do whatever I need to do to feel like I'm actually there and not watching through a screen. But if I get a good 30 seconds to remember forever, I'm happy about that. I would NOT be opposed to a "no phones" policy. It is weird seeing people stare at the concert through their phone.
I am not recording in Philly. That's why I went to three shows this tour. 30 seconds a song on one show (just to remember) and fully enjoy the rest.

And yes, I do actually look back at my videos quite often, I think it's great. I'm very cautious about recording so I don't annoy other people and don't annoy myself.

You also need to remember that if it wasn't for people recording during the shows, we wouldn't be able to see them via this website or youtube. So, I don't care either way, just be smart about it and enjoy yourself at the concerts

I'd imagine most people recording are young, so they go wild when they are done recording, but remain still and quiet when they are recording. So, the applause after the songs is very good, but the dancing and cheering and clapping during songs could be better. at this point the band is so used to it, that they may appreciate the fact that people are sharing their experiences on the internet and that they spread the word about the concerts and reach out to so many people across the world.

see you in philly

OK, after a few pages of posts in the Boston thread pleading for a video of Memory Motel, now people want to ban recording? Typical Stones fans - want it all.

Actually it was the Germans who advanced; the Poles were occupied.

Ah, I see. They were too distracted by their smartphones to realize they were being invaded, and when they finally did bother to look up from their smartphones it was too late. Gotcha. Those devices can be a real security hazard. I'm glad I'm too smart to own a smartphone. Let's see the Germans advance past my front door....

I'm selfish. I didn't take any pictures or video and just watched. And knew someone else would post videos of the whole show. People should be free to do what they want at a show as long as they don't harm anyone.

True! Furthermore, I'm glad people do take pictures and videos..... as close as you can get and not be there....bless them!

The world would be a better place if someone had a good smart phone at Brussels in 1973.

I have a lifetime of great memories from concerts I've been to. What I don't have are decent video documentations of my personal concert experiences. I really wish they had smart phones in decades passed but this is really the first Stones tour of the smartphone era. That is why it is such a phenomena.

The concerts I saw at O2, Brooklyn and Newark were some of the most amazing concert experiences I've had in my life (O2, 11/29 was the best ever, honestly) and for this reason, I'm really happy I shot the videos. My pit shot of Midnght Rambler is actually pretty decent IMO with pretty darn good audio too. (No thanks to me, I'm certainly no expert, but with 1080p, a pretty good internal mic and some basic editing software, a smartphone shot video looks much better than the boots that emerged just 10-15 years ago.)

But it didn't take away from my ability to enjoy the show either. Basically, all I did was stand there, against the rail with my arm above my head. I don't think I even looked at the image on the phone while it was recording.

A little image stabilization and editing when I got home and now the video has been viewed 35,000+ times. (Too bad the dick with the giant camera had to stand in front of me, but who wants to wait for that to surface?) My video was even featured on Mick Taylor's official page and Rolling Stone magazine's online review of the concert.

I find phones being held up in front of my face maddening, and the people who are videorecording are even worse because that arm stays up there blocking my view. I agree it's a tricky one as I like to see the videos too (there are always professionals taking still pics), but as an audience member I find it a total distraction, and I know a lot of performers hate it too. Jack White bans cameras (including camera phones), for instance, and instead has a professional photographer post 30-40 pics on his site after every gig. It makes a HUGE difference, much more enjoyable.

Strangely enough, tech wasn't a problem in our section on May 31, either for The Stones or later for The Cobras. This can, however, get annoying when it does happen. Back when I wrote for shows, the photographer was usually given the opportunity to shoot the first three songs and were then escorted out of the barrier pit. I could handle it if attendees followed the same rule.

It is something of today's day and age.

I tend to shoot 3 to 5 songs of most concerts I attend. I try to keep the cam as low as possible not to block anybody's view, but high enough not to have 5 mmins of footage of someone's hairdo bouncing.

It is a balance indeeed. I get lots of comments and thanks for posting. YCAGWYW from O2 Nov 25 has been watched 47000 times, well over the venues capacity. I shot some Peter Frampton that has been watched 290000 times.

I see a lot of people holding up phones with really poor lenses and holding them up as high as they can while dancing. Surely that footage is totally worthless and they do annoy a lot of people.

It does detract me from watching the show and at the same time I'm really happy to have the souvenirs.

When you put thousands of people together some people will annoy other people, mostly without intention. I can get annoyed by people clapping, singing along, talking loudly, bumping into me while dancing, smoking, showing aggressive behaviour, cutting in front of other people, smelly people, etc.

The art is to be able to focus on enjoying the show and blocking out any detraction. Most times I succeed. Sometimes I struggle.

That is exactly why I can't do it. It feels unnatural to stand still and be quiet at a concert, so that's what I end up concentrating on, instead of the music. The few times I tried it with my new fancy phone at Philly 1, I felt like I missed something about the performance. But I do so appreciate the videos posted and I know plenty of people who can tape and still enjoy the concert so I'm grateful to them.
Schillid, I'm very happy for you that it worked out with the tickets and you get to see them twice now. Cheers!
