Why German audiences clap on 1 and 3?
Posted by: RawIguanaCologne ()

Mick mentioned it few times, that he can hear where on the planet he´s performing and said it something only German and Dutch audiences do.

f you ever witnessed it, you must admit, it doesn´t work with rock´n roll.

Huge part of German audiences can´t get this awful clapping on 1 and 3 out of their minds. It emberasses me all the time, specially on Stones or McCartney shows.... Clapton complained about that too!

What do you think?

The strong beats in classical music (german music after all) are the first and the third, maybe that's why they clap that way

Interesting... any video of this ?

Good demonstration of how your culture affects basic things like that; the language we speak also affects the way we think.

Last night I attended a Clapton concert, Willie Weeks and Steve Jordan were a great rhythm section. Clapton simply knows how to play rock'n'roll and blues guitar in a tasteful way, even if some wisecracks always criticize his limited technique. I am German but I must admit that the silly clapping was disturbing at times. I never clap nor do I start attempts to sing along. Some of my countrymen feel the urge to do so. I think that Clapton can live with it. I got me four beers without clapping.

PS: If it gives you joy and pleasure, feel free to mention the war.

Mick (or Chuck) just has to count the band in on 5... problem solved.

I'm German and believe me, not all of us clap on 1 and 3;-)...but sadly, most of us do...

I think it has to do with classical music and traditional German folk music in which the emphasis concerning the "beat" is very different from traditional music in other areas and, of course, from blues and jazz.

Clapping on 1 and 3 can get very annoying sometimes, it even "hurts" me when I'm at a concert or when we're playing concerts with our swing band ourselves. It can get very distracting and it kills the "swing".

Fortunately, the eight year old son of my girlfriend "naturally" claps on 2 and 4. I've never seen him clapping "wrong" to swinging music, be it jazz or R & B or Rock & Roll...

I'm not a great enthusiast when it come to clapping (Or singing along for that matter). My girlfriend warned be about the German clapping habits when we went to the Bigger Bang show in Hannover. She told me she used to record Rockpalast shows in the early eighties and most recordings were ruined by the clapping.
It turned out to be true. I also can sometimes recognize a German boot by the clapping of the Audience.
I understand people want to show their appreciation for the band and for setlist choices but can't we just wave or wink or something?

Look, if the Stones really cared about their German audiences, all Charlie would have to do is skip one beat and everything would fall into alignment.

Geez.

And Mick should wear lederhosen.

They have zero issues with German march music - one and three. I must have some German in me - 2 and 4 does not come natural. smiling smiley

I was going to post that it's because they're stomping--in their jackboots--on 2 and 4....

Oh, sorry! You said not to mention the war!!!

But I feel I can joke with you on this, as I'm part German, and my grandmother was living there (from Mannheim) during the--

Oh, sorry! I was told not to mention the war!!!

Right! Time to bring on John Cleese to remind us of something we're not supposed to mention....

Here's the clip of that scene in full, from one of the funniest episodes of the series (The Germans; series 1, episode 6).
