Not that impressed with Hampton Roads 1981

Sorry, but having watched Hampton, lots of people's favourite boot, I just don't get it, the songs are played too fast, Mick wears some silly outfits' Bill is totally disconnected from the action, the quality ain't that good - TV broadcast breaks up a couple of times, it's just not classic Stones = in my opinion only of course.

Cheers

the best advice is: close your eyes! (or listen to a CD bootleg). The (visual) show is shit, but the music is great (at least during the first half of the concert)

"having watched Hampton"

Yep that's the problem. In the word of KR "the eyes are the whores of the senses". So pick up the cd boot instead.

I actually liked it alot better than the official video release for that tour. Waaaay better actually. Was there ever a time that Bill didn't look disconnected from the action? To each their own, but to me it saves that tour for me as I'm not all that crazy overall about the Hal Ashby video or most of the boots. Some gems on all of them but this show I enjoyed overall. In fact I have somehow misplaced my boot of this and really wish I could find it!
Funny how we all differ in our likes in this way, but it's all great!

I'd like to add that this tour did in fact have the best SMU version for me and that is due mostly to Charlie although I like the guitars best on this as well.

Everyone has their favorites and of course I went to see the Stones in 81 and enjoyed myself but its probably my least fav tour before the "corporation" (before 1989).And I really dont think Hampton was even the best show of the tour....

I quite like the Hampton Roads video. Don't lets forget that it was the first ever live broadcast of a Rolling Stones concert in its entirety. And the last tour ('81/'82) with just the core band, including Ian Stewart.
I thought the camera angles were very good and the editing was at a minimum, thankfully. And, of course, the sound mix is superb.
I have fond memories of the night of the original broadcast, "having a few beers, smoking a few joints, at home with ya, alright", with friends in Manhattan Beach, CA.
Watching the broadcast, I was hoping that Mick would have worn the long black silk scarf I tossed on the stage in Chicago weeks earlier. He danced with it so gracefully during YCAGWYW. He also used it in a lewd gesture between his legs, the next night, during SMU. What I wouldn't give for a picture of that!
I taped the Hampton Roads simulcast off the radio, and it was a permanent fixture in my walkman for a very long time, until my apt. in LA was ransacked and some loser made off with it.
An excellent dvd of Hampton Roads was put out by Jointrip. What am I listening to this very second? Under My Thumb.

The Hampton show was killer!

I downloaded the double-DVD that was made from a so-so quality videotape of the broadcast. What becomes evident before too long is that the Rolling Stones are in the "Zone" for this show. In some ways that is more important than anything. I think that both the audio-only and the video are great.

In 1981 Mick could still bring forth the "young Mick Jagger" from time to time. When you do the math from this perspective 1981 was pretty _close_ to the 1960s! It's a shocker because in 1981 I was of course younger, and the 1960s seemed like an eternity away. Only 12 years had passed since the 69 tour...

Mick does not have fluid rock'n'roll animal moves any more, as can be readily seen in Shine a Light. In his prime his stage presence was awesome. In one of the 1968 JJF videos you can feel it big time.

Back on the subject at hand, Hampton is great, they are in the Zone for sure!

Thanks for all the feedback on Hampton, it is a good show, but just not one of my favourites, still it is The Stones, and, to be fair, they are always good/great, whatever the circumstances!

Cheers

I love both '72 and '81 tours, but whereas I sometimes feel I've heard it all before listening to a '72 show, I always hear something new in the Hampton show. It's always fresh, forever new.

Yep. Hal Ashby's direction of the Hampton TV broadcast was much better than his work on the Let's Spend the Night Together film, which really didn't have anything new to add and in parts was an incoherent disaster.

In my opinion the show is average, the sax player is very annoying (in particular on YCAGWYW), the guitar parts of RW sometimes weak (on YCAGWYW he seems to be completely absent), on JJF his "lead" part is a series of bump notes, MJ's vocals aren't on top (exception: UMT), the version of "Let Me Go" (a burner on ES) is somewhat lame. Highlights are UMT, Whip, Shattered, Black Limo, Beast of Burden (but larger solo guitar parts were preferable instead of Ernie Watts sax), Let It Bleed, Miss You (not my fav Stones song, but here okay). In general the sound is a little bit muffled. I prefer the recordings on "Ride Like the Wind" from this tour (the 4 CD version).

Yeah, for me a great memory. Great time to be there seeing live. But listening to it, not a great show. Again, Mick just doesn't sound good. Total coke cold, and is barking. The music is too fast. Not a lot of nuances, and all in all a bit of a shambles, which can be exhilerating for The Stones, but I prefer the European leg of the tour than the US.

...On the bottom of that early 80's b&w promo-pic (the one that says "ROLLING STONES - Rolling Stones Records, distributed by Atlantic Records" ) there's a tongue logo, that appears to be the original one (the tongue looks thicker, and with only one 'slide' on it; on the right side, not one on the left side... wheras the 'second' version, as used up to today, has two 'slides' - btw: I hope ths is the correct word in Englsh... and if not: I hope you understand what I mean... cool smiley )

...I thought that original wasn't used anymore since - well, since its the early 70's, in fact?! After a short while (2 or 3 years) they made some alterations, and started using this 'new' version all the way up till now!?

Anyway. Not a big deal, obviously; it just caught my eye - and made me wonder. If anyone has some insight on this: please share.

From your description....sounds like (until now) you were totally unaware of the entire 81-82 tour?

Pastel colors....football style clothing for Mick etc......... yep, that's the one.

IORR............but I like it!

Yep...about sums it up for me.

Yeah, I don't get it either. The 81 tour has nostalgia written all over it because that was the tour many of us remember as first-time fans.
But in hindsight, it was musically anemic, Jagger was yelling, and for the first and only time ever, the Stones toured with a Kazoo-player.
Listening to it and watching make no difference to me - its high-decibal treble from start to finish and the beginning of the "separation" between Mick and Keith and you can feel the tension on stage. For the first time, the stage seemed really, really big. To me, the performances lacked passion, and it marked the "going through the motions" feel of later tours.

I love the guitar fueled performances
The shows where it wasn't clear who was in charge.

Highlights include the raunch and slop of Jumping Jack Flash held together by Charlie's unflinching back beat for 7 minutes.

Hampton was a great great time.
