Is Keith Richards the Prince of Punk?
Posted by: stonehearted ()

Johnny Rotten may not agree, but this lengthy and thoughtful online article on the life and times of Keith Richards gives the devil his due:

Yeah, Keith Richards is older than rock ‘n’ roll itself and nearly as old as the electric guitar. But is he the Prince of Punk? Richards certainly has the hard edge of a punk; just watch his onstage demeanor, how he moves in a menacing way and snarls like a pirate. If he’s got a feminine side, he doesn’t show it! And in the old days at least, Richards certainly could kick some ass. He’s no Sid Vicious – but Vicious didn’t sick around long enough to become legendary. Of course, in this context, calling Keith a punk is a term of endearment, because rockers love their punks, those defiant, rebellious guys, as long as they’re likeable, and Keith Richards is certainly one of those!

Keith Richards is truly the Prince of Punk!

I can't think of anyone else who fits that title. It's as true as Neil Young being the Godfather of Grunge.

Steve Jones can play as well. His lead licks have a Chuck Berry influence. Sid Vicious was the one who [literally] couldn't play.

Here's a rare clip of Steve Jones in a guitar shop playing an acoustic guitar.

Steve Jones talks about the origins of The Sex Pistols and the 35th anniversary of Nevermind The Bollocks in an interview at Google LA on 17 September 2012.

I would even go as far to say that Keith is more punk than pirate (in a good way). I didn't find myself disagreeing with the article much at all.

But Iggy Pop was pretending to be Jim Morrison in the beginning. He even auditioned for the part of Doors lead singer in 1971, before the other three decided to carry on as a trio. His 1977 song The Passenger is [loosely] based on a Morrison poem.

With that logic, everybody are pretenders, expect for some obscure guy 60 years ago, whom nobody knows who is...

Iggy? Nope, he had the 60s to build his character on. Even more a pretender...

Johnny got it from Keith. Check out his stage moves sometime, the cocky tilt of the head while affecting the smirky snarl, not to mention the heroine chic.

One Two Three Four!!!

In his teens, Dee Dee first played with Johnny and Tommy Ramone in a mid-60s band named The Tangerine Puppets, after a Donovan song.

Did you know that the surname Ramones comes directly from a Paul McCartney pseudonym? While touring Scotland in 1960 as The Silver Beetles, they took on psuedonyms as stage names to appear more professional and Macca used the name Paul Ramon. Dee Dee would have known this and made the other band members aware because he was a huge McCartney fan. McCartney also used the name in 1969 while guesting on a single by the Steve Miller Band.

And while Keith Richards never held a normal job or worked a day in his life apart from being a Rolling Stone, Dee Dee had a preppy side to his persona, and before joining The Ramones he held a job in the decidedly un-punk profession of beauty salon hairdresser.

Could you imagine our Keith as a hairdresser? Instead of scissors, he would have used "the blade". 'Yeah, a little off the top, awright?'

Keith obviously admires Hank Williams. Because HW was a huge influence on country & western, and C&W eventually came to be a significant influence on the music of The Stones, and on Keith in particular, I think that puts HW in the running for Prince of Rock.
