RIP John Lennon 8 december 1980
I do remember that day very well, cause that winter I was living in Canada at the time. I woke up around 5.30 in the morning, having breakfast-turning on the tv for the news...

Since that day I always listen to John & Yoko/ The Plasic Ono Band music every december.

I would like to hear others about that day?

Probably, up to THAT time in my young life (19) the WORST days of my life were Dec 8/9 and Christmas that year... it always makes for a tough month still, but having lost family and freinds since then I keep things in perspective, but I STILL feel the pain... sad smiley

This is a day that is plastered into my memory. Already started my personal memorial by playing his music and remembering. Kind of hard this year as I'm in the middle of celebrating The Stones 50th, but I will fit it in never the less. R.I.P. John Lennon, he means a lot... still.

I know I give the beatles some shit here when I'm drinking (sorry) but they do roll.

But compared to the Stones in my book, that's when I get a FIRE in my belly supporting my Stones band & especially when I'm sipping good red wine.

But they are the 2nd best, I think...

Cheers.

John Lennon was one of the beautiful people in the world. What a loss for us all. Still so sad.

Echoing what many have posted, it was the worst day of my life up that point. I was also 16, and settling into bed early to be up for school. My Mom stuck her head into my room slightly buzzed saying that she heard Lennon was shot and killed. I angrily dismissed her, knowing evening where when she got stuff wrong. But I awoke in the morning and it was everywhere. And it hit me like a lead brick in the face. I walked to school in a daze and went right to my favorite teacher/mentor's room who was also a massive Beatles fan. On his black board was the picture of Lennon from The Beatles (White Album) and underneath written, "Silence Please" I just looked at him and and he nodded and I walked home. I came in and my Mom was sitting having breakfast and she said "your home, why? What about school?" I told her I couldn't do it. And she said ok. I went back to my room in a the dark teenage gloom burdened by a tragedy that I was barely able to comprehend and cope with. The entire day I stayed in my room listening to the radio, and being sad.
RIP Winston O'Boogie you brought love and light to so many people. An amazing feat for a human.

I was 14 at the time and not heavily into music, so the loss did not affect me so much in the moment. I listened as the radio played the hits from Double Fantasy into the spring of '81, and soon after, as my tastes in music began to develop, I delved into the back catalogs of the Beatles and Stones and other groups of the time, so I felt the loss more retrospectively. It would have been interesting to hear how the Beatles would have sounded when they were due to reunite in the early 80s, and whether they might have reunited sporadically in the years ahead.

Odd that The Stones will be gigging in NYC on the anniversary of Lennon's death. They will surely play I Wanna Be Your Man. It will be interesting to hear what words Jagger says from the stage to mark the date.

I was very, very sad when I found out the news. I was 24 years old at the time. It felt like a favorite uncle dying. John was always my favorite Beatle. I always wonder if the Beatles would have reunited if John had lived.

Thanks for your Great posts and thoughts.
I listened today to the Shaved Fish album, one of my favorites with so many great songs some political and some in your face songs that will make you think about life and people. Would be great if the Stones would make a gesture towards John Lennon?

Mark Chapman was moved from Attica to Wende Correctional Facility this year. It is in Alden NY, a small town that I have worked in many times this year. A short 20 minute or so drive from Buffalo. Not far from Attica.

Jim Morrison was born on that day, 1943. Better singer and perfomer than Lennon.

I was a freshman in college. I was with my best bud at the time, Annie who was a HUGE John Lennon fan. We'd spend hours in her room listening to John. She was an art major and had many sketches of him on her walls. Devastated is too kind of word for what we felt. We just wondered around the dorm looking for someone to bum some beer off of. I'll never forget my idiot roommate asking me who John Lennon was. OUCH.
RIP John Lennon. The world was never the same without you. sad smiley

Keith and John were great friends. I the 70´s Keith always carried a gun, don't know if that would have helped John, he was shot in the back and John didn´t like guns either.

You are such an disrespectful ass. Why would you hijack a thread where people are pouring their hearts out about an event that has caused pain, grief, and reflection. Other to show how immature you are? How clueless you are about people's feelings? How juvenile your need to put music in a competitive comparison. It is clear you do not appreciate the music so why post on a thread like this at all, other to prove to others you have such a shallow depth of feeling and understanding. What a waste of energy.
