Because rock'n'roll archetypes (the "pied piper" frontmang, the silent bass player) were originated by them. okay, the "crazy drummer" wasn't, but then there's Charlie Watts who basically epitomizes the "solid" drummer.

Because just as Hendrix revolutionized what a lead guitarist meant, Keith Richards revolutionized what a rhythm guitarist meant.

Because they wrote a a sh*tload of amazing tunes.

They represent defiance and energy. I discovered them ten years ago when I was 17 and across all of Forty Licks their still sounded youthful energy. They are still energetic and dynamic to this day, their stamina is incredible.

They want to live, and grab the fruit off the tree, even from the depths of oblivion.

I was going to post, but you said everything I thought of pretty much EXACTLY how I was going to say it.

This question looks easy but it isn't really! And it's a good one! Thinking about it, it might be easy to give lots of reasons, some of them already there in some form in these posts. Now, when I think about it, what is really difficult to pin down - at least for me - is what it was that really attracted me in the first place. I mean at the age of 12 - a long long time ago - what the hell was the determining factor to choose them among other bands, musicians etc.? Because this happened first, the attraction, and then you just love these people and their music. I shouldn't maybe analyze it, but my first encounter with the Stones was a record and a cover (Black and Blue). No live, no video, no nothing. I listened to other bands too, mostly through borrowed LPs changing hands at school. But Black and Blue was the first record I wanted to buy, the record I wanted to have at home! Now how can I reason with it? How can I argue with it? Why the Stones? Still puzzling me!

Their great songs, their great attitues and their longevity and other reasons...

Well, that's a fun question - I think they are all great at their respective parts but they are just so great together that makes them the best. As solo artists they leave a lot to be desired imho. Jagger is the best front man a group ever had or will ever have; Richards has the soul of the band and has those chuck berry licks down and Charlie's drumming is just perfect. Add to that the Slide guitar of Ronnie; Mick Taylor's excellent licks in the late 60's and early 70's and of course Brian's multi-instrument chops and dedication to the blues, it's a magical mix. It's also neat how they've changed with the times over the year, Blues, classic rock, disco, reaggae, country, back to rock etc..

I think Bill Wyman was great, but I'll let someone else elaborate LOL

if i had to pick one thing, i'd have to go with their shoes. they put on really good shoes.

The answer is very simple - just listen to the music, and the sounds Brian made with the different instruments he played. It was 'love at first hear' for me.

I do not love The Rolling Stones, I like only their music very much! Also they are the greatest live act in the world.

I don't really and try and dissect why I like them. The music just does something to my soul, that no other band's music does.
