Declaring my #2 fav band
Posted by: marchbaby ()

1. Rolling Stones

2. J. Geils band, love how they are mostly bluesy, but came to the pop 80-'s sound. with Love Stinks and Freeze Frame.

Wish I could have seen J. Geils live. Seems like they are done and Peter Wolf is solo, is this true?

Mick's rock, I'm roll.

This week it's Jimmy Smith, the jazz organist. My wife calls me a serial monogamist, so it'll be Jimmy for awhile.

It varies from time to time:

Also Elo and right now The Killers.

Ian Dury and the Blockheads - the only band I ever saw who got a proper full blown standing ovation half way through a show (Rhythm stick >< SweetGene Vincent >< Blockheads..25 mns)....as good as the Stones finishing off in Buenos Aires, sublime but only 2nd favourite because much smaller output of great songs and because of Ian's disability (Polio) very short shows - usually only an hour. And really surreally funny often enough ....IMO anyway

Maybe someone will like something and then have a new band to explore..........

I also think the Grateful Dead is #2.

But not in the way you guys do.

After the Stones, it becomes individuals:
#2 Jerry Lee Lewis. A true raw genius.
#3 Miles Davis. Never looked back; always reinvented himself.
#4 (TIE) Yeah, it's a copout, but I live in Austin, Texas:
Willie Nelson
Waylon Jennings

"But once you're down in Texas, Bob Wills is still the King."
Charlie G.
from The Heart o' Texas

I knew Rhythm Stick but enjoyed Clever Bastards so I've just downloaded it. Effin' Ada is probably a keeper too. Thanks for posting!

Actually the Grateful Dead would be in a tie for number one for me with the Stones. Love em both. Two totally different scenes but each uniqely tremendous to me.

All the years combine, they melt into a dream,
A broken angel sings from a guitar.
In the end there's just a song comes cryin' up the night
Thru all the broken dreams and vanished years.
Stella blue. Stella blue.

When all the cards are down, there's nothing left to see,
There's just the pavement left and broken dreams.

In the end there's still that song comes cryin' like the wind.
Down every lonely street that's ever been
Stella blue. Stella blue.

I've stayed in every blue-light cheap hotel, can't win for trying.
Dust off those rusty strings just one more time,
Gonna make them shine, shine

It all rolls into one and nothing comes for free,
There's nothing you can hold, for very long.
And when you hear that song come crying like the wind,
It seems like all this life was just a dream.
Stella blue. Stella blue.

Love the Kinks but only Mott the Hoople battle for top place with Stones. Unless you count solo acts and I'd have to include Dylan.

Several share that slot for me...

Grateful Dead, The Cure, and non-noisy offerings from the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Kinks, the Clash, Franz Ferdinand....a hard choice to make....

Not no.2 but other favourites:

Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd, the Beatles, Sly and the Family Stone, Air, Marc Bolan/T-Rex, the Small Faces, the Velvet Underground & Nico, Roxy Music, the Kinks, the Who, the Libertines, Kraftwerk, the Stone Roses, the Beach Boys, the Wailers, the Manic Street Preachers, Pulp, the Smiths, the La's, a-ha, the Waterboys, Blur, the Temptations, Blondie, the Stooges, ABBA, the Pogues etc. etc. etc.

If you're including solo musicians (not in the previous groups) : Serge Gainsbourg, David Bowie, Kate Bush, Bob Dylan, Keren Ann, Michel Polnareff, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Francoise Hardy, Jacques Dutronc, Otis Redding, Van Morrison... Jacques Brel, Robert Johnson and Mikis Theodorakis if we're going away from rock'n'roll, whatever that is. And so on. In the middle of a period listening to any of them I'm probably wanting to declare them the BEST EVAH but then I feel bad at leaving anyone out so you get annoying posts like this.
