OT : Las Vegas suggestions

Heading over to Vegas for a week in September, anyone know of any music stores that have those - hard to find/Import Cd's?

Also any suggestions of places that you just have to see or even just stay away from. Are the shows from Cirque du Soleil - Love or O worth it? I know both are very expensive. Thanks...

Go to the Liberace museum. Good stuff. Also take a cab to the place of Tupac Shakur's shooting, and take a picture. Watch the fountain and the free show outside at Treasure Island everynight. For good "off the strip gambling", visit the Golden Nugget downtown. Wish I was going.....!!! Have fun.

I liked the Beatles LOVE show, mainly because all this great Beatles music came over this great sound system. The Cirque du Soleil dancing/acrobatics took second place to the music. But I'm glad I went.

I went to see Beatles "Love" with my former college roommates. When it ended, Erik, a true Beatles fan, said, "What the hell just happened?" The music is awesome because it mashes up tunes so you hear them in a wholly different way than you're used to. The show is an attempt to put a storyline to those tunes, which doesn't work. It could have been shorter with more pure acrobatics.

Oh yeah, one more place. The DoubleDown saloon (i.e The Happiest Place on Earth), for a cold beer and game of pool.

Vegas is a wicked town.

Definitely go to The Hard Rock Casino. The music is always awesome, the last time I walked in the door there, Rocks Off was playing! If there is a concert at The Joint, go to it.

Love show is too expensive and I don't think it's worth it, in my humble opinion.

The best thing to do is to go on "Walk About." Just hit the streets one morning and walk and stop wherever you feel like.

The Luxor is a great place to stay.

Never been to Vegas, but if walking about the streets is anything like Times Square, count me out. What a tourist trap that place has become, there is nothing there in the way of shops or restuarants that you can't find in any mall in the US, and it's so crowded you can barely move through the streets. The only reason to go there is to see a Broadway show, otherwise find somewhere else in NYC to go, anywhere. Sorry for the rant. Here's a few record stores to visit, courtesy of the Vinyl Tourist:

Don't think you'll find any Bootleg CDs in Vegas, but you never know what you'll find out there in the desert.

Was just there for 3 nights 2 weeks ago. At least my 7th vist over about 20 yrs.

To see what shows are there during your visit check out this Website [www.visitlasvegas.com]
Navigate to "Shows and Events", put in the spread of days you'll be there and it will show you EVERY show that's playing by date. Most big name traveling artists play Vegas on the weekend but there are plenty of regular shows all the time.

BEST SHOW....Celine Dion hands down. The Cirque shows are very good but I've already seen one and that's good for me. I'm sure the LOVE show is great but like you said it ain't cheap. Best rock shows are at The House Of Blues and The Hard Rock but MGM and Mandalay Bay get big names as well. I love comedy right now and saw black comedian George Wallace at the Flamingo. It was a great show at a great price. I want to see Andrew Dice Clay next.

HAVE TO GO TO.... The Hard Rock Casino (late on a weekend is insane), Go to top of the "eifel tower" at night on hallucinogens, view the Bellagio Water Show from the elevated open air walkway from the Bellagio to the Cosmopolitan (the street gets too crowded)

BEST PIZZA ... the secret pizza shop on the 3rd floor of the Cosmopolitan (you may have to ask an employee to find it)

BEST FOOD COURT in a casino.....New York-New York

BEST PEOPLE WATCHING.....the southwest corner of the Flamingo. It's the ONLY place on the strip you can sit for free. You can get booze or coffee (or nothing) there 24/7 and nobody hassles you. There are no waiters here. There is a restaurant at Paris where you sit on the strip but you have to have a meal to be seated.

BEST SLOT MACHINE....a lot of the casinos have a new line of machines with distinctive reflective symbols. They have some variations but ask for the "Gigantic Sevens" machine and the attendant will lead you to them. They must not be calibrated properly because I couldn't lose on them in any place I played them. Start with $20 and get off when you think you've won enough.

COOLEST NEW CASINOS...the Cosmopolitan and Aria at the new City Center complex. Be sure to view the 2 leaning hotel towers called Veer, it's awesome.

GETTING AROUND....free tram from Mandalay to Luxor to NewYork-New York. Free Tram from Treasure Island to The Mirage. Free tram in the City Center. Pay Monorail from MGM to Ballys to Harrahs. Cabs are a great value as things are not very far away. Take a cab to and from the Hard Rock, don't try to walk there. Cab or free mini-bus from airport to hotel. Take a cab from your hotel to the airport as the free rides are a little slow and stop at a few other hotels along the way.

WHERE TO STAY....somewhere in the middle of the Strip. Not too far up and not too far down.

HOOKERS...most casinos after midnight. They are very young and always travel in pairs and ain't cheap.

Have fun, be safe and give us a full report when you get back. And yes you can drink on the street smiling smiley

Double Down has a bacon flavoured martini. Odd but worth a try. Check the Hard Rock/House of Blues websites to see who's playing. Seen every Stones show at the MGM. It only holds 14k people and is ussually the smallest arena show they play in the US when touring. As for record stores. Record City has 2 location. Ask to see the stuff not out or what they are going to put on eBay. Reasonable prices. Some boots. Then there is Wax Trax Records. This place is questionable. Great selection but the few times I've been in there left with a bad taste. The owner didn't price anything and quoted prices depending on how you looked. Guess he didn't like my looks because he quoted $60 for a Cramps US Goo Goo Muck 45 on IRS. I tried buying 10 or 12 common 45s another time and he wanted $500 for the lot. Geez! Google 'record stores las vegas' for a list. Also, remember prostitution is ILLEGAL in Clark County. They take a dim view of tourists picking up hookers and you will go to jail. Have fun but be safe. It's not a free for all adult playground many think it is.

Santana is doing a residency at the Hard Rock in September. I saw him co-headline for the Allman Brothers last month and his and kicks ass. Great show and highly recommended.

Well, if what you like is a cheesy fake castle building at the Excalibur with a sign on it saying "Lynyrd Skynyrd Beer and BBQ" this is your town...only in Vegas.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Duane you really went out of your way with your post, thanks - may need to book an extra few days to get everything in. I guess there's no chance the Stones getting off their butts and getting over to MGM in the next month - didn't think so...
