Proposed Set List For January 2013 HBO Concert At Madison Square Garden
Posted by: stonescrow ()
Date: November 22, 2010 18:35

Since the next tour is supposedly a "done deal" is it OK to assume that the Stones will be playing MSG sometime in January of 2013? And is it OK to take that assumption one step further and assume that HBO will be present with their camera crews to televise it? If so, then here is my proposed set list for this historic event.

#1. Street Fighting Man
#2. The Last Time
#3. Saint of Me
#4. Out of Control
#5. Plundered My Soul
#6. Lady Jane
#7. New Song From New Album
#8. New Song From New Album
#9. Under The Radar
#10. New Keith Song
#11. Happy
#12. Satisfaction
#13. When The Whip Comes Down
#14. Midnight Rambler
#15. New Song From New Album
#16. New Song From New Album
#17. Torn And Frayed
#18. Like A Rolling Stone
#19. Don't Stop
#20. Flip The Switch
#21. Rip This Joint
#22. YCAGWYW
#23. Gimme Shelter
#24. Brown Sugar
#25. Jumpin Jack Flash

What's yours?

Why January 2012 at the MSG ?confused smiley

I wouldn't dare talking about my " wishing set list" without even knowing if the Stones can tour and ,most important, with which guitarists .

I am a Frenchie ,as Mick affectionately called them in the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1977 .

The Saint of Me and Out of Control? Are you kidding? These would be of zero interest to an HBO mass audience (following your logic of it being an HBO-filmed show).

Those were the highlights in 1998 in Europe, when they were new songs
and the Stones, I mean Jagger, had the enormous balls to play them.

Twenty-five songs would be a record, wouldn't it?

I think you are vastly underestimating the mass audiences ability to recognize a good song when they hear it. I fell in love with these songs the first time I heard them and I was nowhere close to the Stones fanatic I am now when I first heard them. To be honest with you I can't stand HTW and BS, two of the Stones most popular songs of all time. No worry, the more exposure they receive the more widely accepted they will become.

They can handle 25 songs. Since it's only one show and would take place in their 50th anniversary year seemed like a good number to settle on, despite the fact that they generally do 19 or 20.

Unless they perform a medley of some sorts, don't expect more than 18 songs. I would even hedge on 15 to 18 songs. That would put them into Diva territory. Too bad for the core.

Two of the greatest Stones songs ever! If they had the "balls" you speak of and would just play them on every tour they would eventually be recognized for their greatness by even the "tourists"!

Oh yeah, no doubt it will. I even had a hard time putting Brown Sugar on my list also because I never did like it and like it even less today. Same goes for HTW, I am sure it will be included to but if I never hear that song again it won't bother me in the least. I am also sick of Satisfaction even though it's recognized as their greatest song ever. It's just a matter of too much exposure.

28 - Knebworth '76 + a tiny bit of Country Honk, and that's with the two song medley of 'If you can't rock me><Get off of my cloud' being counted as only one song......otherwise of course 29

In 1981 and 1989 it was not unusual with 24-27 songs setlist.
If they could cut out the band introduction, have Keith to sing just one song and then have a stage like 1975, 1978 or 1981.
Maybe have the composition like in 1981 - Stones and 2 keyboard and 1 sax or Stones, 1 keyboard, 1 sax and one backup singer.

Hey stonescrow, I dig your list. The only change I would make would be to substitute either Carol or Little Queenie in place of Under the Radar.

Not sure of your definition of "new" song (brand new song from a new album or new old songs they rarely play?).

Regardless, it'd be good to be reminded of the Olympia show in 2003 where they played mostly obscure tracks (which is in a sense, new).

4. Hand Of Fate
5. No Expectations
6. Worried About You

looking back on those theater shows - they do look rather satisfying. only complaint would be the choice of covers leaned too heavily on material that didn't require (nor receive) much in the way of guitar playing...love train, nearness, how strong my love is, everybody needs....what those shows coulda/shoulda gotten was a heavy dose of some berries....

Here's what I'd like to see:

1/4 or at most, 1/3 of the setlist as warhorses sprinkled about throughout the show.

The rest of the setlist should be semi-obscure tunes from throughout their career that most people would recognize and say "Wow, I forgot about that song!" and be glad to hear it again.

I think warhorses are a necessary evil to sell stadiums & arenas, but there is so much more the Stones can fall back on and really keep a crowd's attention.

Good point. With the possible exception of "That's How Strong My Love Is" which showcased Mick's vocals--the others were indeed misplaced in such a eclectic set for a once strong GUITAR band.

I wonder what kind of set Keith or Ronnie would come up with if they were handed over setlist responsibilities? I doubt "Love Train" would be on that list...
