Have they ever played sister morphine live? Don't think so.Great song!

I don't remember they've played this live. That's absolutely fantastic song but I have my doubts about how it would work when played live. I think they just cannot produce that eerie atmosphere on stage.

they played it on the b2b tour...one version wound up on no security. it was better than expected, but the "ry effect" was sorely lacking...

Great! I was forgotten that they played this song on the BTB tour.

marianne's version is still the best, imo.

I love the version on Sticky Fingers. For me it's hard to beat Ry Cooder's haunting slide guitar. And when Charlie kicks in, woof!

Marianne's version has also Ry Cooder on slide guitar,Jack Nitzsche on piano, Mick on acoustic guitar and Charlie Watts on drums.

Marianne does a good version on Blazing Away

I think it's the best Stones' song of the Taylor era,
though it was finished before he came on board.

I heard the first ever in Chicago. Me and about 20 other people in the crowd of 60,000 went crazy while everyone else scratched their heads. cool smiley

The Ry Cooder solo is one of the best things done on slide guitar ever. I love the Sticky Fingers version, but the bluesy BtB version was strong too.

No, this one:

Jack Nitzsche's metallic-sounding piano part is also what makes this song so great imo...

Isn't the piano part played on the strings of the piano?

... underscoring what was lost when Ry was out of the running to replace Jones,
however serious the band was in acquiring him. But as was pointed out above,
the other session musicians' input was just as effective. "... Morphine" marks
the pinnacle of The Stones' maturity.

C

On the original the D isn't major as such because the high E string is left open.

You are right! What chord is that? No third, so it could be major or minor. Scratching my head in a hot summer day trying to resume notions of music theory form a very far a away past ...
