With the British accent it comes out like suck it tup and the tup sounded like duck. I would imagine MICK sucking a duck ~ either a live duck or eating a cooked duck and sucking on the bones.

I always heard "Do the Horrendous to that if you can" on Love You Live after Keith's song. But I read the lyrics later: "Tune the marimbas to that if you can". Thought I was wrong for many years, but somebody brought up the history of that phrase here, and I think my ears were right the first time!

Bottom line is that there are a bunch of errors in the published lyrics out there.

I can't tell, sounds like it could be either. I tend to think doornail because that's the actual lyric of the song.


Its been a long time since the last time I heard this version and one thing I notice is how good the vocals are. Almost makes me wonder if they were overdubbed..

In Stray Cat Blues, instead of "It's no hanging matter", an expression I wasn't familiar with at that time, I used to hear: "It's no hanging at my door" which didn't make much sense to me either.

I used to think that, too! That's still what it sounds like, though it obviously isn't. Once you get a line into your head one way, it's hard to change.

OK, this is lame, but when I was young and didn't know much, the lyrics I thought I heard in Honkey Tonk Women were...

...I later, did the same in New York City....I had to borrow some kind of advise...

I had no Idea what any of this was supposed to mean. My parents always told me the words to rock songs don't mean anything.

As for Rock songs........... when they ask Gary Brooker what do you mean with "A Whiter Shade Of Pale"...nothing it just sounds funny

I asked my wife who was born and raised in England which expression was more common, and she said "dead as a dodo".
She then said both phrases were/are commonly used.

I was born and raised in California, and we always said "dead as a doornail"...never heard "dead as a dodo", but I like it and it makes sense.

As for what's said in Let Me Go on Still Life, I have no clue...
