>> " Welcome Hampton ... Welcome Virginia ... a few joints ... allllll right"

from memory, it's something like: "... and welcome to everyone watching at home on TV -
hope you're all sittin back drinkin a few beers, smokin a few joints - all right"

the Hampton gig was the first pay-per-view concert broadcast in history - hail hail Rolling Stones :E

WOW, i was typing this, almost verbatim, starting with "from memory" and finishing with the PPV reference! I got called away for a minute and I'm too late;
Great minds...

whoever said that hasn't got much of an ear, have they. Keith's singing is brilliant -
that's why he's one of the lead singers for the Rolling Stones.

and now back to the regularly-scheduled thread
Yeah well I quite like Keiths stuff as well but I have over the years listening to others opinions I've come to accept that to some not only Keiths but Ron's & Dylan's voices are at best an aquired taste and at worst to some like sandpaper on the back of the neck, as I say I quite like them all but others perhaps won't settle for less than Pavorotti or such like, just a matter of taste......EddieByword

In Short and curlies, for a long time I heard, and...She's got me by the balls, when in fact the lyrics say: she's got me by the boards - referring the boards as slang English for the edge of the docks. Either way, it all kinda means the same thing anyway - we get the picture. The Stones never included lyric sheets in the albums in those days.

I've just reviewed some lyrics websites to realize that they all print «by the balls», so I guess I was hearing it right all along, Someone, I long time ago convinced me it was ... by the boards, and that is what I now hear??

if i recall correctly, the "by the boards" version did circulate in print for a while -
this was the era of "Star Star"-esque censorship, after all ...

in a song called "short and curlies" i dont know how or why you have to hide the word balls!! Maybe the actual title meaning slipped by the censors!!

Before I saw it printed, I thought the ONE MORE SHOT line "spare the crucifixion" was "spread a piece of fiction."

I always thought it was "Let's spend the night together" but then, back in the '60's when I saw them on Ed Sullivan, I realized the lyrics were "let's spend some time together". spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

Beast Of Burden:

Is: Throw it all at me, I'll just shrug it off

I heard: Crying laughter, I'll just shrug it off

Memory Motel:

Is: I hit the sack and cried

I heard: I hit the second grind

Get Off Of My Cloud:

Whole damn song

There are some mishearings I remember, not only in Stones Songs. When I was 13 years old I listened to Muddy Waters'Hoochie Coochie man and I wondered why a man like Muddy Waters repeated constantly: "Cause I'm gay! Everybody knows I'm gay"!

The kids at the school I work at did a rock and roll musical revue and included SMU. I sat there wondering what they were going to sing when they got to that line, but the music teacher had them end it with you make a grown man cry. It occurred to me then that there are not many Rolling Stones songs that are kid friendly, lyrics wise.

The Lucille Bogan influence on the closing Start Me Up lines is addressed elsewhere on this forum.

When I was young I always misheard "My name is called disturbance" in Street Fighting Man.

What I heard was "My name is Corporal...." , never could figure out what the Corporal's name was. lol

When I finally learned the real lyrics, it was truly enlightening! thumbs up
