OT : Mariano Rivera
Posted by: ChefGuevara ()

I don't think baseball is a big thing here, but Mariano Rivera
just set the all-time saves record with 602. An amazing record
that does not seem breakable in our lifetime.

A great athlete and a true gentleman. Hats off to Mariano!

thumbs upthumbs upthumbs up
I can not give this enough thumbs up... Mariano is a legend.. and I kind of despise the Yankees, but I give credit when it is due, and Rivera is a badazz mofo... I hate that guy (mainly cuz he never was on my team) (not that my town has had a worthy/real professional team, of any kind kind, for 15-25 years).... fk : (

A great accomplishment, no doubt, but it doesn't strike me as a "never will be broken" record (though you did qualify it with "in our lifetime").

His class shone through opening day, 2005.

between Rivera and Jeter it's been an incredible ride to be a Yankees fan...even if A Rod plays for them.....

I would have like to see that 602 record pitch between Mariano and Posada.

But yes, hats off to the Yankees and especially Posada, Jeter and Rivera
that have played so well together for so many years.

The saves record is great, but he made his bones off of his post season numbers. The guy's been a class act and almost perfect his whole career. I'm a Mets fan, but hats off to a great player!

Maybe I should clarify for reasons of efficency. F u c k the whole American League subsequent to 1973. If you can't hit the ball, or worse, don't even try, don't play. In my humble opinion, Mr. Rivera only played half the game. Shame really, I've always believed all those American League pitchers got cheated by the most frivolous rule in professional sports. Don't know what Floyd Mayweather Jr. has to do with the Yankees, but if he's a Pinstripes fan . . . then yes, f u c k him too! ha ha!

Thanks again for posting Chef

He's a true gentleman.

I read today that this is Mariano Rivera's 8th season with more than 40 saves
and his second best season ever, and at almost 42 years old.

Looks like he still has a couple more seasons in that arm.

I dont know how he does it, when so many other humans have failed... I think common opinion is guys who start out as great closers, eventually the league figurs them out...or maybe it is becasue they become bazillioniares and stop caring as much.... or maybe their nerves get fried (closing a game is no small task, and if they blow the save, they suck worse than anyone EVER!!... but if they close it successfully, well duh, of course he closed it..... but closing is no small task).... I dont know how he has stayed effective for so long, but we can all learn from his keep on keeping on...even after becoming a baZillionaire rich man.

Nonsense. The double switch is not the be all and end all of baseball. NL pitchers get one gift non-hitter nearly every time through the lineup.

By pitching in the AL for his entire career, Rivera hardly ever faces an opposing pitcher. So he has made a career out of getting outs in big spots by pitching nearly all the time to actual big league hitters. And he has been a class act all the way. I'd make a little shrine in the mancave to him, if I had the room.

Anyone who plays for the Yankees, or is a Yankee, I could care less.

You took the words right out of my mouth .
The fans of the Red Sox are brought up abhorring the NY Yankees but over the years I guess I've mellowed . There are some former and current Yankees that have what it takes to earn my respect .
Derek Jeter , Mariano Rivera . Bernie Williams , Paul O'Neil are a few that come to mind .

Really hope the AL final comes down to Yankees - Red Sox . If the Red Sox can come out of their tailspin .

Cumulative record.

The record to break is to hit over .400. Last person to do it was Ted Williams - 70 years ago.

Nothing against Mariano, but a relief pitcher is a specialist, not a position player. He is required to pitch one - at the most two - innings in an appearance. Yes, he does that very, very well. But let's see someone hit .400 again. Then I'll be impressed.

If he were so modest, why couldn't he give up his #42 in tribute to Jackie Robinson, like just about everyone else did? Doesn't seem very classy to me.

Re: OT : Mariano Rivera

He most likely wore it originally in honor of Mr. Robinson and was not required by MLB to relinquish the number .
When Mo Vaughn was a member of the Red Sox he also wore 42 and continued to wear it until he left to play for the Angels .

Nice, thanks for posting.

I agree that this is one record we wont seen broken in our lifetime... just like Cal Ripken Jr's 2131 consecutive starts. One has to be a loooooong term quality player to hit these marks, and drugs and steroids wont help them reach longevity marks and with the money paid out these days, guys are BaZiilionaires, fat and happy long before they reach these lofty numbers....

....with that said, yes, I think money speeds up the already fast fuse on professional athletes career. imuho, I think all athletes should be paid 100% commision based on their first 3 years in the league. For the first 3 years all rookies should get an esculating salary based on their play, and then after 3 years with thier standards set, they MUST reach those performance numbers in order to make the money they hope to be paid, and if they exceed the numbers they will make more, but they must perform on the field or they will feel it in their bank account. How many times have we seen a player have a great season, sign a BIG FAT contract, and the next year, they are Kaput, until the next precontract season.

My point is...
Mariano Rivera kept on producing loooooonnngg after he was a rich KaBillioniaire, like the great player he is, for the love of the game... and unlike some here who are too petty, snide or imature to set aside their trollish feelings.... today I am able to reconize the man for what he did....tomorrow I will be back to despising him and despising the damn Yankees, but for the moment I will give this great player all the credit he deserves.
