No Woodstock, Gimme Shelter or Last Waltz - but they have "Fearless Freaks" with Flaming Lips on the list. What is this? Is this really supposed to be the Top 15 list of best rock docs ever, or have I misunderstood something here?

Agree about Last Waltz, but this was best docs available to stream on netflix, maybe Last Waltz isn't available.

Bob Dylan - No Direction Home???

seems like Rolling Stones magazine forgot more than what's actually on their list…

Its the "15 Best Rock Docs on Netflix Instant" is it possible that Gimme Shelter, Last Waltz, Kids are Alright, Rattle & Hum, etc., are not on Netflix Instant?

Not really sure what Netflix Instant is . . .

That list is terrible! First of all most of those movies are not documentaries, but concert films! Yeah Last Waltz isn't really a documentary, it is a concert film but if they are including all those crap movies from Jackson and Madonna then The Last Waltz should be there... No Direction Home was stunning and should have been in the top five. The Kids Are Alright should be No. 2, but The Beatles Anthology is the mother of all rock documentaries. What can been 10 hours of interviews, films, and music? 'nuff said!

I think you are correct. Netflix Instant provides films that you can stream over the web. A friend of mine has it, and its pretty cool (he hooks his computer up to his 42" widescreen, and it always works fine with no pauses or glitches). The choice of films is fairly limited though, and they seem to change the list of what they offer every month or so.

Rolling Stone magazine is primarily concerned with selling converse sneakers to Justin Bieber fans... hence we find the Michael Jackson film on their list of "best rock documentaries"... And the slideshow doesn't provide any discussion on what actually constitutes a great film (thematic, technical, aesthetic)... The two glaring omissions from their list are "Gimme Shelter" and "Don't Look Back", each of these films are considered masterpieces by filmmakers and film scholars. I am a filmmaker and have had my music documentaries screen at international film festivals, and let me tell you any filmmaker worth their salt gets down on one knee to "Don't Look Back" and "Gimme Shelter".

everyone shouldn't get their knickers in a twist, netflix doesn't carry a LOT of good movies, so no surprise the classics aren't listed.

I'm actually surprised that
1. Stones in Exile is already on netflix and
2. It is listed on the top 15 of any list.

I bought it and watched it...once. Hopefully, I'll have enough curiousity to watch it again in a few years to justify my purchase.

It was ok, it wasn't horrible, it just wasn't a great doc.

I prefer 25x5. Let's get that on DVD, with additional material to update for the last 25 years. That should add about 10 minutes to the documentary.

Oh, I slay me.grinning smiley

Sorry treaclefingers- I was joking when I said I can think of a few lists it belongs on! smiling smiley Like maybe "greatest missed opportunities" or "worst reconstructions".

You are correct about 25x5. Thats a great documentary, very simple, very cool. I purchased 25x5 on VHS last year, because I couldn't find it on DVD. Since then I think I've seen it on DVD, ain't it always the way. But maybe these are bootleg DVDs.

In think 25x5 on DVD is probably bootleg...no worries, I didn't want to offend if you really liked Stones in Exile.

Ugh! Why can't people pay attention to WHAT IT IS THEY ARE READING, instead of just jumping to conclusions about it?

Gimme Shelter, Beatles Anthology, Don't Look Back, No Direction Home, Last Waltz, and The Kids Are Alright are the gold standard. The one on the The Ramones was also quite good.

I vote "Gimme Shelter" for #1.

What about "Eric Clapton and his Rolling Hotel", "Festival Express", "Amazing Journey" or "Iron Maiden Flight 666"? There are some good ones besides the classics.
