Stones FIFTY
Date: April 18, 2012 00:51

I made my own FIFTY compilation (actually two of them so far, one in chronological order, another that is somewhat more clever, I guess - it starts with Jumpin' Jack Flash of course...). Took a number of tracks from the hits comps that sound the best, some edit versions, deleted some that some might scream as criminal but it makes sense, added some later LP tracks and...some lesser known/popluar songs and...does anyone think the Stones are really going to release ANOTHER HITS COMPILATION? Just because it's been "fifty years"?

They haven't released anything in that regard, since Video Rewind in '84...they are overdue!

There's the spirit!

To truly challenge yourself, you should have to pick 10 songs(no more than 10), from each decade. THAT would be a great challenge.

I'll start. THE FIRST DECADE:

1. Satisfaction
2. JJF
3. SFTD
4. Gimme Shelter
5. Paint It Black
6. Brown Sugar
7. Street Fighting Man
8. Moonlight Mile
9. YCAGWYW
10. Let's Spend The Night Together

THE SECOND DECADE
1. Rocks Off
2. Tumbling Dice
3. IORR
4. Miss You
5. She's So Cold
6. Start Me Up
7. Slave
8. Memory Motel
9. Beast Of Burden
10. Time Waits For No One

The THIRD DECADE
1. Undercover of The Night
2. Too Tough
3. Continental Drift
4. Blinded by Love
5. She Was Hot
6. Tie You Up (The Pain of Love)
7. Almost Hear You Sigh
8. All The Way Down
9. Terrifying
10. One Hit To The Body

The FOURTH DECADE
1. Like A Rolling Stone
2. Saint Of Me
3. Out Of Control
4. Thief In The Night
5. Love Is strong
6. New Faces
7. Blinded By Rainbows
8. YGMR
9. Sweethearts Together
10. The Worst

...ok, that decade was a struggle

The FIFTH DECADE
1. Plundered My Soul
2. Under The Radar
3. Dangerous Beauty
4. Rough Justice
5. No Spare Parts
6. Claudine
7. Do You THink I Really Care
8. I Love You Too Much
9. Don't Be A Stranger
10 You Win Again

hmmm, i think that list was my favorite songs NOT on 40 Licks

so i'll leave it at 45, which with the 36 biggies on 40 licks, brings my
total to 81

i'm a bit confused, and don't feel like digging up 40 licks, but i think
that's right. who knows. who cares. i got more than 81 i LOVE that's
for sure.

treaclefingers and WeLoveToPlayThe Blues...

Um, sorry guys....

Something released in 2005 and something released in 2010 or 2012 are not part of the same decade.

For the '00s we only have A Bigger Bang and 4-gettable Licks. For the whole decade.

I know, kinda pathetic to call yourself a real 'band' with that kind of output, eh? But hey, they're Rock Royalty and we should be thankful they've graced the earth and taken our money. (yeah, sarcasm).

Let's face it, all they've been doing for a whole decade is celebrating anniversaries of this and that. They're The World's Greatest Rock and Roll Band after all, right? We know this because they've been telling us so for over 40 years.

Your quarrel is with WLTPTB, and not me Jamie. I've done the decades, as each 10 year block they have been in existence, not 'the 60s, the 70s, etc.

So, for clarification purposes, I went 1962-71, 1972-81, and so forth.

That makes my list accurate for my purposes. If we're going with WLTPTB, then I agree he is trying to add stuff in from 2010-2012 in that last decade, and really, we need to be starting on decade #6 for that.

I will stick by my original list. My list is less forgiving, as it gives more weight to later career material, which is unfortunate.

If I were to cull 50 of their best songs (in my opinion) there could be no way to hammer out the decades like that. It would bascially be a few early hits, the late 60's. the 70's, a few from the early 80's and maybe 5-6 from the Vegas Era.

I know. I was just going along with the 'decade' thing although not the way Treacle had it (2000-2010 is 11 years etc). I know 1980 is not the first year/beginning of the 1980s, it is the last year of the 1970s.

Re: Stones FIFTY

True. By default, saying the Twenty Hundreds means two things - the century and the first 10 years, starting with 2001. So...yes, technically, the Some Girls UMe reissue is in the Twenty Tens. But I lumped it in with just the Twenty Hundreds. Apologies to all! spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

Absolutely RIGHT!

It makes little sense to release such a collection with equal weight given to each decade. Leave off a couple of dozen superior songs to make room for mediocre ones?

No Thanks, I won't be buying that.

Re: Stones FIFTY

The track list I made was the usual 60s tracks (I actually don't have them ALL), quite considerate of the 70s tracks, a few good ones from the 80s and then...it gets really thin. I left out SFTD, Paint It Black and Honky Tonk Women for some reason.

It's just shits and giggles of course.

Eggsactly!

The entertainment value was to try and give equal weight to each decade. The one I really struggled with was the the 4th decade (no surprise there). The fifth decade got easier because of the (IMHO) superior ABB but mostly the Exile and Some Girls extra tracks on the deluxe editions.

Simply superb. (and yes, I understand that is cheating, but we're going by release dates, not recording dates!)

The decade that truly suffered was decade one, which could easily have had 30 of the 50. Who are we kidding, they could have had all 50 culled from there!

That's what disappointed me greatly with Forty Licks. Putting in 4 useless new songs with Mixed Emotions, Love Is Strong, You Got Me Rocking, Anybody Seen My Baby "democratically" shoe-horned in - that's 8 songs leaving only room for 12 earlier songs that people might have wanted from, say, Sticky Fingers, Exile or even Tattoo You.

Dno't get me wrong, there's a good chunk of songs I don't care for on disc one (19th Nervous Breakdown, Have You SEen Your Mother, Mother's Little Helper, their BLAND version of It's All Over Now), but for the older 'historian' fans I guess you need them and I'm okay with that - gotta please the folks who were alive in the 60s I guess.
