Maybe they didn't sell out, but they didn't have much else to show for it.

Wasn't "Mel" from Grand Funk Railroad the original bass player?

Never heard of them.
I wonder if this is what The Stones look like to non-fans?

They were on one of those PBS sixtees music shows- the lead singer was dancing like a girl from the seventees throughout the whole song. I'm not an expert on them but imo they seem like one of those bands that lives off of the same hit for years and years.

"Lyin' awake in a cold, cold sweat. Am I overdrawn, am I going in debt?
It gets worse, the older that you get. No escape from the state of confusion I'm in.

Check this out:

During the 1990's, Question Mark and the Mysterians wanted to re-release their now out-of-print albums 96 Tears and Action , but unable to because the song rights now belonged to record executive Allen Klein.

One-hit wonders they may have been but they had plenty of other great songsgrinning smileyo Something to Me, Love Me Baby (Cherry July), Girl, You Captivate Me, etc. Couple rockin' live reunion albs. as well: one on the old ROIR label that was a cassette-only release back in the early 80's (that's where I first heard 'em) and a recent one on Norton called Do You Feel It Baby? The Captivating Live Sounds of ? and the Mysterians. Didn't change music forever or anything but definitely a FUN band.

"Girl, You Captivate Me"

Wasn't the original lyric for this one "Girl, You Masturbate Me"...?

That Rudy Martinez is a strange fella.

Yes, it was. And yes, I think he is.

If you like the Mysterians you should also check out Arthur Lee & Love. Their first album is amazing though their 3rd album gets all the praise.

I'm lucky enough to remember when this was a hit on AM radio...

And Iggy used to cover it in concert during the 70's.

I remember seeing a CD of the album at some point and it must have been on Abkco because that explained it's conspicuous absence on Nuggets.

Arguably the most iconic garage-rock hit of the 60's, and it's not included on the definitive collection of such?

Klein!

We used to cover "96 Tears". Amazing track. Apparently the original was recorded all live in a back yard or something.

When Elvis Costello & The Attractions put out the "This Years Model" LP, keyboardist Steve Nieve was accused of being influenced by the organ sound on "96 Tears" but he had never heard the song.

It's hard to be a sell out when there's no one buyin'

'96 Tears' is my all time favorite jukebox rocker in a poolroom, where the bass distorts and bounces off the wall.

With their choice of a name for their band, they were way before their time - they pre-dated Prince in choosing a symbol as their name.

I think you underestimate the power of one-hit artists.

This guy :

still makes 1000 euros every day of the year with this song, released in 1976.

So I guess Martinez must be afluent.

He's not. As mentioned earlier in the thread, he signed a contract back in the 60s that pretty much screwed him for life. He lives here in the Detroit area, and when his house burned down a few years ago, a local club let him book a show as a fundraiser. Tickets were $10.00. Apparently, he hadn't been affluent enough to afford homeowners insurance.

On January 10, 2007, a fire destroyed Rudy Martinez's house on his farm in Clio, Michigan, destroying all of his memorabilia and killing the Yorkshire Terrier dogs that he bred as his business. To help Martinez, his friends held several benefit shows for him, with Martinez performing at some of these events.
