Album Artwork
Date: January 1, 2012 15:56

I was thinking about starting a thread dedicated to album cover artwork. Similarities, coincidences, good ones, bad ones, boots etc.
Here is one by Spiritualized that I like a lot.

Stones Boots are so many great ones; and VGP signed off on many of those. Don't even know where to start but here is one from the 75 Tour MSG 6/24 "I Can Sing Lady Jane"

I don't even know where to begin. So many great album covers. Other than Stones albums some of my favorites have always been "Strange Days" by The Doors, "Animals" and "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd, and many more.

For people my age this is probably one of the most iconic album covers, even if you don't like the album, you know the cover.

It's awfully witty when someone takes off of a famous album cover.

I was able to find these, there are many other such attempts. I think everyone of my generation knows the Soul Asylum album by heart.

I was a Soul Asylum back in the day, had several albums and saw them live once, but that is the first time I've seen that album cover, or heard of that EP. I wasn't a die-hard fan though who collected everything, and like many people I didn't get into them until they really broke out with Grave Dancers Union.

Then there is this great tribute to a tribute to another. It is a beautiful shot of a cover to begin with; the Elvis cover. The Clash cover is one of the greatest iconic shots in rock. And Jagger always looks fabulous in 72/73.

I didn't know about this one. went and looked it up.

London Calling by the Clash definitely, some people are wrapped up in it, if it makes posters and avatars.

For those who don't know, up near Newcastle England is Sunderland whose inhabitants are often called Mackems.

I always found this to be very clever, Brian Clough is in there amongst others.

[www.a-love-supreme.com] Some name for an unofficial website of Sunderland Football Club supporters, A Love Supreme.

SAFC, Sunderland Athletic Football Club ... and I don't know if there is a special meaning to OK.

Now it seems like everyone has done a riff on that. It was a brilliant idea/homage when done by The Clash, but when you get some ho-hum act like Pete Yorn doing it, it kind of saps the power from the whole concept.

sticky fingers is the greatest ever. and the first album with the zits and
without any words, fantastic!

have always been partial to the stunning quality of some of the early
lithographic portraits, much better in person than in these jpegs:

in a somewhat similar vein, rihanna's new one is killer. the open mouth, the
keith richards cigarette smoke, no makeup or hair dye or wig. damn.

I have the Herb Alpert vinyl cover...found it at an old record sale. I almost jumped on top of it. It is iconic.

I'm not particularly a who fan, but that cover is a very brilliant one that
i forgot about, especially in the contexts of both the monoliths in 2001 A Space
Odyssey and the infamous Stones petrol station incident. A + + + Pete is a very
clever boy.

Once I dropped acid in High Point State Park in NJ, just before this album came
out, and I could hear all the trees breathing exactly like the synth lines in
Baba O'Reilly, only a bit more slowly. It was gorgeous.

Obvious nod to the Sex Pistols, I always found this one just odd:

On a quick sidenote: there is a song by KD Lang that I heard once, and I have been wanting to find it but don't know the title, or even the exact words. But in the song she is asking herself this question. And she calls herself 'Kathryn'. Like "da da da da, Kathryn?' or "What is the deal, Kathryn?" It bugs me because everytime I hear the name KDLang I start thinking about that again. I even looked at some of her lyrics to see if something jumped out, but nothing.

It's "The Mind of Love" from Lang's '92 release, "Ingenue".
Fun LP. "Drag" 's good, too.

Buzzherd, thank you, thanks. It has been one of those nagging musical trivia Q's that been driving me up the wall. It is definitely that song, yes.

I own three of these, but the images here are courtesy of ElChae's Lounge. I love the old style vinyl covers
