It makes me cringe and and cry - Drift Away
Posted by: MileHigh ()

Does anyone else share my opinion that the recording of Drift Away (perhaps around '74) is absolutely horrible?

Mick Jagger's vocal is horrible, he and the music sounds like a funeral dirge, and I just want to curl up into a ball when I hear it.

I'm glad the Stones never officially released their inferior version.
The Dobie Grey version is far superior.

It was one of several covers they recorded for the studio side of an EP they were going to release. Fortunately they only released one of the covers, Ain't Too Proud To Beg.

well it isn't as good as the original, but I don't get my knickers in a twist over it.

Winning Ugly, Don't Hold Back (or is it hold back?) , Let's Work....those make me a little squeamish.

Please post a video of this, thanks!

P.S. It's only rock'n roll.

They have recorded way worse things. I don't think it's bad at all, and I love the original Dobie Gray version.

Cherry Oh Baby is a fantastic example.

Actually IORR was originally going to be an entire side of covers, but then they started piling up more originals and ditched the idea. Yeah, I don't get too excited by this song...seems too "happy" for the Stones during that time. And the original is far superior.

Drift Away is one of my favourite outtakes by the Stones. Great song, Absolutely smokes with great Keith backing vocals. Can't wait for them to release it officially!

Pete.

Thank you. Yes, I share your opinion. I never understood what's so great about it.

I like it, and the Dobie Gray-version, of course.

What exactly is wrong with Mick's voice? I think he did a good job. But there are some issues with the tempo on the bootlegged version, and that may have affected Mick's voice. It's a tad too slow, I think.

Never heard of any intention to release an EP in '74. The recorded a new album in late 73 and early 74, and recorded two covers with the intention to include one on the new album. They prefered ATPTB over DA.

As said in my previous post -they never intended an EP or an album with a side full of covers.

It's too corny for my taste.

It would have been nice to have the song amidst "If you can't rock me" and "It's only Rock
'n Roll". They could have added that song from The Byrds too, and BB's "Rock me baby" and have
a complete album side with songs about Rock.

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

I like the stones version. But don't forget Rod Stewart version was avaible at this time too. Perhaps the reason why the song stayed in vaults.

I thought that the original genesis of the project was a live side with songs from the European tour and another side with mostly covers. Then they started working and originals started popping up and quickly that idea was scrapped. I think it was more of a stoned pie in the sky idea that got them back in the studio.

i like the nevilles' version best...stones version has no zip or punch or pizzazz or razzmatazz or something...and, yes, i believe the extant source is dragging, speedwise....

From what I understand, Keith doesn't play or sing on this one.

But if you listen Keith is clearly audible with the main guitar and backup vocals.
