what notable musicians have retired (and stayed retired)?

Grace Slick doesn't do music anymore.

In the mid-90's Paul Simon said he was "absolutely" through performing live - that was about 500 concerts ago.

Who has stepped away?

David Bowie - stepped back in 2004, due to illness; but has not started up his career again after that.

Of course he has since passed away, but Johnny Ramone stayed firmly retired after the Ramones disbanded in 1996 up until his death in 2004.

(almost) every artist who saw his/her creative vein running dry and realized that there was no future except releasing deluxe packages of old revisited stuff

(I'm not usually a basher, I'll support them anyway buying their releases; let's say I'll paciently wait to be contradicted and I'll be very happy in case it will happen; a sort of tease and invocation for something new).

Gotta go with Elvis.
Plus the elaborate disappearing act that accompanied the retirement.

Genius

Maybe because he died on December 17, 2010. RIP Don Van Vilet.

That's taking retirement a bit far isn't it?

Van Morrison has almost retired. No new album in years, only a handful of concerts, no archive releases. But as a young father he's probably busy with his kids.

Anyway, if he has nothing good new songs to offer it is better if he does not release a weak album. His body of work is so great that the fans will have years to listen to!

Billy Joel stopped writing and recording in 1993, but has continued to tour as an oldies act.

I don't know if he was completely retired. I don't think he took on any projects, but I think he made a couple of solo recordings, not entire albums, just a few songs. And he appeared with Pearl Jam a few times after Ramones disbanded. I know for sure he played "The KKK Took My Baby Away" with Pearl Jam at a 1998 concert.

Noddy Holder. Slade tour with two original members but Noddy has refused to take part in a reunion.

Didn't one of the Abba girls retire and stay retired?
