How you're supposed to put together a super-deluxe box set

So what do you want in super-deluxe box set of a ground-breaking early 1970s double album? A new well-engineered cd "remaster", audiophile vinyl produced from the analog tapes used for the original album, a new cd and DVD of previously unreleased live performances from the era? A well-produced book? All at a price that you don't feel as if you've been totally shafted? Well, yes that all would be nice.

Well, here's how it's done for a good bit less than the EOMS debacle.

Bitches Brew

(Yes, I still feel bitter)

>>Well, here's how it's done for a good bit less than the EOMS debacle.<<

which EOMS debacle are you talking about? I'm pretty and very much happy with my copy of the remastered Exile, I don't care too much about the previously unreleased material - but it's good to have.
I did not have to pay onehundredandthirteen dollars to get it and it spared my precious time to listen to Miles Davis!
so once again - which EOMS debacle are you talking about?

I'm talking about the price and value of the Super-Deluxe set, not the relative merits of the remastering or what you happen to think of the artist.

You can put together the new EOMS CD and the vinyl for about $50. The book is nice, but is cheaply produced. Is it worth $60-70? I don't think so, more like $15-20. The DVD in the EOMS set is a sampler, which is now obsolete (unless you count the few minutes of CSB ). If you want the full Stones in Exile and the L&G DVDs you now have to fork out another $25-30 to get the complete versions. So charging $120-140 for the super-deluxe EOMS set is a great way to shaft your fans in my opinion. If you paid less, then good for you. I paid about $115, and felt totally ripped off. I think the pricing and content of the BB set is a much more interesting way to deal with a classic album reissue. Whether you want to listen to BB or not is up to you.

I'm always happy to agree with open-g, but in this case, I don't
Yeah - bigtyke, the Miles Davies box is a good example of a release that serves both the artist and the "fans" well. unlike "exile deluxe" .....which should be re-titled "EXPENSIVE exile-DOWNgrade.....but it includes some nice photos"

Ah thanks, now I get your point....and you're probably right.
I just don't buy those super duper deluxe versions of anyone - not even the Stones.
they don't add more content to the body of work, IMHO.
cheap (yet expensive) thrills aren't for me.

Imho the simple fact the EOMS deluxe isn't much talked about (except here) 4-5 months after its release is a sign it wasn't a landmark release (to put it mildly).

I asume the unsold copies will be discounted for X-mas...

I would think it would be clear that the purpose of any "super deluxe" option is to rip off the super-fans. It's obvious that these packages aren't worth the huge mark-up they represent from the "deluxe" versions. Beware record-sellers making "books"...

As an example of a well-produced set, I think the BB "super-deluxe" IS worth the money (~$90). Considering what it could have been with a bit of thought and effort, the Stones set is unfortunately a rip-off.

My EOMS deluxe :
a 4-cd box of outtakes, alt versions and a bit of studio chat would have made my day. I would have put the 30' trailer online for free downloading...

The real Bleed Sessions will do for me (something like the Their Satanic Sessions) 5 CD box set.

I don't need a Super the Luxe Box set just add a nice CD with Pictures, Stories and background information and I will print them myself

For the first time, fans will have access to two discs containing a total of 21 previously-unreleased songs from the 'Darkness' recording sessions, songs that, as Springsteen writes, "perhaps could have/should have been released after 'Born To Run' and before the collection of songs that 'Darkness on the Edge of Town' became."

Highlights include the extraordinary rock version of "Racing in the Street," the never-before-released original recordings of "Because the Night," "Fire," and "Rendezvous," the supreme pop opus "Someday (We'll Be Together)," the hilarious "Ain't Good Enough for You," the superb soul-based vocal performance on "The Brokenhearted," the utterly haunting "Breakaway," and the fully orchestrated masterpiece and title song "The Promise." All 21 songs have been mixed by Springsteen's long-time collaborator Bob Clearmountain. According to long-time manager/producer Jon Landau, "There isn't a weak card in this deck. 'The Promise' is simply a great listening experience."

The Deluxe Package also features "The Promise: The Making of 'Darkness on the Edge of Town,'" a documentary directed by Grammy- and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Thom Zimny. The ninety-minute film combines never-before-seen footage of Springsteen and the E Street Band shot between 1976 and 1978—including home rehearsals and studio sessions—with new interviews with Springsteen, E Street Band members, manager Jon Landau, former-manager Mike Appel, and others closely involved in the making of the record. Advanced word on the documentary is so strong that it was invited to debut at the prestigious Toronto Film Festival on September 14 and will make its television debut on HBO on October 7.

DVD 1: "THE PROMISE: THE MAKING OF 'DARKNESS ON THE EDGE OF TOWN'"

In addition, the set features more than four hours of live concert film from the Thrill Hill Vault, including the bootleg house cut (the footage that appeared on-screen at the concert) from a 1978 Houston show, and a 2009 performance of 'Darkness on the Edge of Town' in its entirety from Asbury Park. The special performance in Asbury Park was shot in HD without an audience and successfully recreates the stark atmosphere of the original album.

We all know the the price contents well before release day so I don't think the claim that these products are rip-offs stands up particularly well when you've decided to buy them anyway.

the EOMS box is clearly pricey, but for me the book is not "cheaply produced".
it is better than the YaYa's book no ?
