Some Girls is Mick's divorce album, but I think songs like Think I'm Going Mad and No Use in Crying are sad.
The saddest for me, Dylan's Simple Twist of Fate, Dire Straits Romeo and Juliet, Neil Young's Only Love Can Break Your Heart. But then, as someone said, alot of Neil Young's music is so meloncholy - not just the lyrics, but the melodies. I don't know, maybe its just that creaky voice that makes it sound like he's falling apart.

Jim Croce wrote a lot of great songs, and they were either really fun and upbeat...or incredibly poignant and sad.

This one always gets me...

"...so I can call just to tell them I'm fine and to show,
I've overcome the blow,
I've learned to take it well,
I only wish my words could just convince myself -
That it just wasn't real,
but that's not the way it feels."

Breaks my heart every time. Croce was vastly underrated.
All his songs sound kind of sad, but maybe the fact that he would die so young makes them sadder.

Croce got lumped into that whole early 70s sensitive songwriter genre. At the time, it was considered adult contemporary and people tended to think of him as just another guy with an acoustic guitar. He died too soon and its a shame because we'll never know what he could have evolved into. Some of his songs have a real bluesy feel and I wonder where he could have taken that.

Mick & Co's version of " As Tears Go By" makes me sad, especially LIVE! Beautiful but sad; I can identify with the longing for childhood innocence. Also Joni Mitchell's " River" kills me, and her " A Case Of You" is right behind it for depressing. Bryan Ferry's " Slave To Love" has that minor chord sadness attached to it as well as the Eagles " Wasted Time". Top of my list, instant tears is John's " And So This Is Christmas"!! Ok, now I want to slit my wrist, thank you!

What about the Eagles' Try and Love Again?
And you reminded me of another "River", Springteen's masterpiece. That whole album is like an open would would.

The ultimate sad, depressing song:

Gilbert O'Sullivan
Alone Again, Naturally

In a little while from now
If I'm not feeling any less sour
I promise myself to treat myself
And visit a nearby tower
And climbing to the top will throw myself off
In an effort to make it clear to who
Ever what it's like when you're shattered
Left standing in the lurch at a church
Where people saying: "My God, that's tough
She's stood him up"
No point in us remaining
We may as well go home
As I did on my own
Alone again, naturally

To think that only yesterday
I was cheerful, bright and gay
Looking forward to well wouldn't do
The role I was about to play
But as if to knock me down
Reality came around
And without so much, as a mere touch
Cut me into little pieces
Leaving me to doubt
Talk about God and His mercy
Or if He really does exist
Why did He desert me in my hour of need
I truly am indeed Alone again, naturally

It seems to me that there are more hearts
broken in the world that can't be mended
Left unattended
What do we do? What do we do?

Alone again, naturally

Now looking back over the years
And whatever else that appears
I remember I cried when my father died
Never wishing to hide the tears
And at sixty-five years old
My mother, God rest her soul,
Couldn't understand why the only man
She had ever loved had been taken
Leaving her to start with a heart so badly broken
Despite encouragement from me
No words were ever spoken
And when she passed away
I cried and cried all day
Alone again, naturally
Alone again, naturally

(I consider this last verse to be one of the saddest and painful verses ever written. I think most people can relate to it in some way. I thought about it all day today while working outdoors. It has just an overwhelming outpouring of emotion and heartbreak)

Agreed about "Alone Again, Naturally." What about this one...Ray Davies wrote it after his Mom died.

"Scattered" by The Kinks (1993)
===============================

Like a seed that is sown
All the children are scattered
By a breeze that is blown
Now the crops are all scattered

We are torn, we are shattered
Now some of us are barmy and battered
And the fields where we gathered
Are overgrown in weeds and in tatters

Through it all we were scattered

To the fields we are scattered
From the day we are born
To grow wild and sleep rough
Till from the earth we are torn

And a soul that is free
Can live on eternally
And the spirit can live on
Though it's scattered in the world beyond

And I've been out of my mind
Ever since she's been gone

I look around that empty room
No sight nor sound
She left so soon

She's out of view
But then I find
Those scattered clues she left behind

A photograph of her smiling face
A cigarette stubbed out on the fireplace
A coffee cup with her lipstick stain
I guess I'll never see her again

Now my life is all scattered
Ever since she's been gone
I feel older, I feel fatter
I feel the blues coming on

We get bruised
We get battered
But we pick up the pieces that scatter
And with emotional glue
We're gonna stick together, body and mind

Ever since she went away
I've been alone to contemplate
Time and space and why worlds move
While sitting in my solitude

I've watched the stars and wondered why
They're scattered up there in the sky
And is she up there out of view
On some higher latitude

I wish I knew
Wish I could prove
The reason why this life on earth
Is scattered like the universe

I'm scattered here and scattered there
Bits of me scattered everywhere

To the fields we are scattered
Then from the dust we are born
We survive somewhat battered
To a new life, a new dawn

In the end what will it matter?
There'll only be my ashes to scatter
And all the logical answers
To a worrying mind
Will be scattered in time

Beaten and battered

To the earth you are scattered
You're going home so what does it matter?
To an atomic mind
Scattered here while you travel time

I wish I knew

Rocky! MY MAN! Great selection! I totally forgot about this one...a wonderful song from Phobia. A classic Kinks on their final album.

If the original 1970 version of "@#$%& blues" isn't one of the most depressing songs ever, I don't know what depressing means.

Last night i was out driving
Coming home at the end of the working day
I was riding alone through the drizzling rain
On a deserted stretch of a county two-lane
When i cam upon a wreck on the highway

There was blood and glass all over
And there was nobody there but me
As the rain tumbled down hard and cold
I seen a young man lying by the side of the road
He cried mister, won't you help me please

An ambulance finally came and took him to riverside
I watched as they drove him away
And i thought of a girlfriend or a young wife
And a state trooper knocking in the middle of the night
To say your baby died in a wreck on the highway

Sometimes i sit up in the darkness
And i watch my baby as she sleeps
Then i climb in bed and i hold her tight
I just lay there awake in the middle of the night
Thinking 'bout the wreck on the highway

Let it Be
An adult Paul singing about the loss of his mother when he was a kid, that's always given the song a realresonance.

YES, STUPIDGUY! That Bonnie Raitt tune is a killer, for sure! Should be in everyone's top ten.
