Sad or Depressing songs
Posted by: The Sicilian ()

Here is a few that make me think and reflect. Can't really think of any Stones downers. Maybe "Fool To Cry"

Anyways "Seasons In The Sun" makes me think of reflection on life and death,

"Cats And The Cradle" is very sad about how life passes you by when you never have time for little things that kids cherish, time with their parents. The thing that always bothered me about this song is that he seems to be glorifying the issue rather than regretting things. IMO one of the saddest songs ever.

"Same Old Lang Syne" reminds me of reminiscing the past and lost time.

Terry Jacks
Seasons In The Sun

Goodbye to you
My trusted friend
We've known each other since we were nine or ten
Together we've climbed hills and trees
Learned of love and A-B-C's
Skinned our hearts and skinned our knees.
Goodbye
My friend
It's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky;
Now that the spring is in the air
Pretty girls are ev'rywhere
Think of me and I'll be there.

We had joy
We had fun
We had seasons in the sun;
But the hills that we climbed
Were just seasons out of time.

Goodbye
Papa
Please pray for me
I was the black sheep of the family;
You tried to teach me right from wrong
Too much wine and too much song
Wonder how I got along.
Goodbye
Papa
It's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky;
Now that the spring is in the air
Little children ev'rywhere
When you'll see them
I'll be there.

We had joy
We had fun
We had seasons in the sun;
But the wine and the song
Like the seasons have all gone.

Goodbye
Michelle
My little one
You gave me love and helped me find the sun;
And ev'ry time that I was down
You would always come around
And get my feet back on the ground.
Goodbye
Michelle
It's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky;
Now that the spring is in the air
With the flowers ev'rywhere;
I wish that we could both be there.

We had lives
We had fun
We had seasons in the sun;
But the stars we could reach
Were just star-fish on the beach.

Harry Chapin
Cats In The Cradle

My child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away
And he was talkin' 'fore I knew it, and as he grew
He'd say "I'm gonna be like you dad
You know I'm gonna be like you"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home dad?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then

My son turned ten just the other day
He said, "Thanks for the ball, Dad, come on let's play
Can you teach me to throw", I said "Not today
I got a lot to do", he said, "That's ok"
And he walked away but his smile never dimmed
And said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah
You know I'm gonna be like him"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home son?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then

Well, he came home from college just the other day
So much like a man I just had to say
"Son, I'm proud of you, can you sit for a while?"
He shook his head and said with a smile
"What I'd really like, Dad, is to borrow the car keys
See you later, can I have them please?"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home son?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then

I've long since retired, my son's moved away
I called him up just the other day
I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind"
He said, "I'd love to, Dad, if I can find the time
You see my new job's a hassle and kids have the flu
But it's sure nice talking to you, Dad
It's been sure nice talking to you"

And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me
He'd grown up just like me
My boy was just like me

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home son?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then

Dan Fogelberg
Same Old Lang Syne

Met my old lover in the grocery store
The snow was falling Christmas Eve
I stole behind her in the frozen foods
And I touched her on the sleeve

She didn't recognize the face at first
But then her eyes flew open wide
She went to hug me and she spilled her purse
And we laughed until we cried.

We took her groceries to the checkout stand
The food was totalled up and bagged
We stood there lost in our embarrassment
As the conversation dragged.

We went to have ourselves a drink or two
But couldn't find an open bar
We bought a six-pack at the liquor store
And we drank it in her car.

We drank a toast to innocence
We drank a toast to now
And tried to reach beyond the emptiness
But neither one knew how.

She said she'd married her an architect
Who kept her warm and safe and dry
She would have liked to say she loved the man
But she didn't like to lie.

I said the years had been a friend to her
And that her eyes were still as blue
But in those eyes I wasn't sure if I saw
Doubt or gratitude.

She said she saw me in the record stores
And that I must be doing well
I said the audience was heavenly
But the traveling was hell.

We drank a toast to innocence
We drank a toast to now
And tried to reach beyond the emptiness
But neither one knew how.

We drank a toast to innocence
We drank a toast to time
Reliving in our eloquence
Another 'auld lang syne'...

The beer was empty and our tongues were tired
And running out of things to say
She gave a kiss to me as I got out
And I watched her drive away.

Just for a moment I was back at school
And felt that old familiar pain
And as I turned to make my way back home
The snow turned into rain --

The Buffalo Sabres fight song.

"It's just some friends of mine and they're busting down the door"

The Buffalo Sabres fight song.

It's a long season, depression and sadness begins in April. But for the Sharks it starts on December 9th in Buffalo.

Seasons in the Sun depressed the hell out of me because I was in elementary school and they played it every morning on the school bus. I didn't know who the hell Poppa was, but that was enought for me.

That's the Way I Always Heard It Should Be, but Carly Simon. Is there any song that sums of suburban boredom and disconnection than this?

If you are depressed by "Seasons In The Sun", don't listen to "Honey" by Bobby Goldsboro.

Honey is a good one. I'm still not sure what happened in this song, it was too much for me as a kid. One day, she's in the garden, then he comes home and she's crying and then he misses her.

One of the most gut wrenching songs is The Kids by Lou Reed off Berlin. Very poignant song, and wow! Some intense imagery.

Another good one is Sweet Thing (The Candidate) by Bowie

Isn't it A Pity by Harrison

Dear Friend by McCartney

How Do You Sleep by Lennon

Then she's dead ("the angels came").

Jagger used to introduce Wild Horses as a "sad, sad, song. Sad songs is all I know."

I think that's an Otis Redding reference.

So true Rockman, and while we are at it, we should include Blood on the Tracks! Dylan said in an interview he cant understand how folks would like an album like Blood being so full of another person's pain... His divorce album.

And if you're reaching for Blood on the Tracks, try to track down a copy of the original acetate, before he went to Minnesota and re-recorded most of the album. On those more intimate original versions, Dylan sounds like the wounds are still raw.

Can't really think of any Stones downers. Maybe "Fool To Cry"

"Fool To Cry" is the song for Mick's daughter Jade, very tender and human, at least, this is my take on it. Maybe "Sister Morphine"?
I find most of Leonard Cohen songs very depressing

I know what you mean. I do find his voice depressing at times. And a voice can make a song depressing if you ask me. Let me give you an example though. I have a DVD that's called Silver & Gold. The song In The Great Divide, although a good song with good lyrics, is pretty depressing all together. The whole set leaves me a bit depressed.

I own a lot of Neil Young albums and I do love him, but he can be a downer due to his voice and lyrics as well.

Edit: let me add the song Philadelphia. Although a great song, it's a sad tale.

if those don't jerk the tears from you, then spin Austin Roberts' "Rocky," circa 1975. anyone remember that one?
