Richard Ashcroft was totally hyped and overrated in the late nineties!

Did(n't) this idiotic "borrowing" by Ashcroft/Verve "kill" the whole band and his solo career as a whole before (t)he(y) had the chance to realize (t)he(y) that the true chanve to become a "new product" for a generation of iorr-followers?!

What's the " Andrew Oldham Orchestra

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Andrew Oldham Orchestra was a musical side project in the mid-1960s created by Andrew Loog Oldham, the original manager/producer of the Rolling Stones. There was no actual orchestra per se. The name was applied to recordings made by Oldham using a multitude of session players and musicians, including members of the Rolling Stones. Four studio albums were released under the Orchestra name: East Meets West, 16 Hip Hits, Lionel Bart's Maggie May, and Rolling Stones Songbook.

Rolling Stones Songbook features the orchestrated version of the Mick Jagger and Keith Richards song "The Last Time" which was sampled by The Verve for their track "Bitter Sweet Symphony". Licensing issues over the sample caused the entire publishing copyright of the Verve's own composition to be taken by ABKCO Records and the entire composition to be credited to Jagger and Richards.

One thing that really gets me about this story: Everyone is always lining up to complain about Jagger/Richards taking all the credit for this song.

However, it wasn't really them. What they forget is that it is Klien who takes the money. Ashcroft must know this yet he still complains about this whole Jagger Richards thing.

I don't feel sorry for The Verve. What happened to them is the price of an education. I'm sure the entire experience was very educating (they won't ever make such a mistake again), so the high price was justified. winking smiley

Let's talk about the music:

The Verve created a beautiful version.

A public disavowal would have done wonders. Instead we get Keith saying things like, "I'm out of whack here, this is serious lawyer shit. If The Verve can write a better song, they can keep the money". Using this logic, you could argue that all that's keeping The Last Time from being being credited to Traditional (for the chorus)/Brian Jones (for the guitar hook) is a good lawyer.

Good pointy about the public disavowal...
