My band played for wounded vets the other day at Walter Reed Army Hospital in DC. We did a little midshow Stones-related set that consisted of Little Queenie, Live with Me, Gimme Shelter, Respectable, and Sympathy for the Devil.

After Gimme Shelter, our drummer referred to that song as being "one of the best things they ever did." I corrected him, "no that's THE BEST thing they ever did, bar none."

As much as I love various live versions of it, the studio track is absolute perfection: Keef's picking of the intro, the whole apocalyptic vibe, Jagger's simple harp in just the right place, Keef's solo, Merry Clayton's cameo, etc. Rock 'n' roll doesn't get any better.

I would pick "The Last Time" my all time favorite Stones song from the true (Brian Jones) golden era.

This is the "classic rock radio question" I reckon, since they tend to play only one song of each band. If it's for a classic rock station indeed, they would want to play something from the 60s and it would have to be JJF. If it was for MY station that would have a different time period for its timeless source material, the recent era to be exact, it would be a tie between "Don't Stop" and "Jump On Top Of Me".

The question is: one song, so the answer must also be: one song (and not two or more). What qualities must that one and only song have? In the first and in the last place that it never bores, but on the contrary, that it always will give new and fresh impressions. Such a song will automatically be musically and emotionally very interesting. Such a song is for me You Can't Always Get What You Want. That seems also a proper answer to this particular question. Not the studio version for me, however nice it is, but the live performance of this song during the 1973 tour in London, Sept. 8, first show. One never really can catch all its content.

Gimme Shelter

As CindyC said here:
"Gimme Shelter - don't even have to think about it. I'll love it till the day I die."

I have asked my wife to play it in my honor the day I die.

aside from dls i think torn and frayed their very best kinda country thing. the whole tracks breathes like a living thing. an amazing track..i could hear that every day forever. but dls still number one. cause it's so primal blistering best rhythm rocking' thing ever to come from that guitar duo. great voles bass drums just sublime. even the uber repetitive thing that makes some people call it shallow or lazy..i kinda think it works here. relentless. it's just fabulous fabulous amazing rock and roll music.
