greatest rock song of all time. but the Stones butchered it - mainly Jagger's fault - he was completely missing the entire point of the song with his delivery. The song is meant as a sneer...he sang it as a "celebration."
It's an OK song. You never listen to it on a record because it has that played-every-ten-minutes-at-classic-rock-radio-station-factor.
I think the Stones do a wonderful version, except for, yes, Jagger. He SHOUTS!! everything. It's supposed to be smooth, funky "onzopponatime you drezz so faihne!!", not "YEAHHH!!!! LET'S GO!!!!! ONCE UPON A TIIIME YOU DRESSSED SO FINNEE!! THREW THE BUMMMMS A DIMMMEEE IN YOOUR PRIME!!! DIDDDDDNT YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU?".
rooster - the Jagger/Dylan duets blew ass. Dylan's a pretty tough guy to sing with, 'cos of his quirky, unpredictable delivery. Joan Baez' ability to follow him back "in the day" was truly remarkable.

they actually played it together 5 times at shows where Dylan opened for the Stones
Montpelier '95 Rio '98 Sao Paulo '98 Buenos Aires '98 (4th and 5th shows)
The two Buenos Aires versions have never circulated. The only one of the 3 others that are worth a damn is the one from Sao Paulo, although its the worst quality sound wise of the three. The Rio and Montpelier versions are train wrecks.
I liked the Stones version of it when they first did it in '95, for its novelty factor more than anything else, although I was sick to death of it by the time the next tour came around.
Good fun, although obviously not remotely comparable to the original or most live versions that Bob has done of it

Nope
although during a scene in the 'Renaldo and Clara' film, you can hear a rehearsal version of it in the background

I prefer Hendrix's take on the song. The version from the Monterey Pop Festival (6/18/67) is just wonderful IMHO. There's something very honest and heartfelt about Jimi's voice & I think that he did a great job singing that song. Too bad he didn't stick around. He was such an admirer of Bob; they probably would have collaborated sooner or later.
i like that version jimi henrix experience did at monterey pop...very much. 'bob dylan's grandmother" on bass, according to jimi, introducing noel redding... i think hendrix screwed up the lyrix and it didn't even matter... he just laughed it off...just didn't matter...whoa that guitar and jimi's vokes too.
and otis doing satisfaction at that same festival (and film)... and that shot of majestic brian in the crowd there...

youre getting 'sad eyed lady' mixed up with the rumoured version of 'lily rosemary and the jack of hearts' which was supposedly played at that show.
yes, u r right, gazza - I'm getting my epic dylan songs all in a twist....I'm hoping for a performance of a medley of sad eyed>rosemary one of these days, too!
according to Baez, she did indeed do a duet with Bob of "lily, rosemary" at salt lake city. She said that Bob remembered the words by writing them on the cuffs/sleeves of his shirt
Presumably it was just the opening words of each line. As the song has about a million verses, he would have needed to have been wearing a shirt with cuffs similar in size to the ones Jagger was wearing around that time (see the Hey Negrita video) to have got them all on there
