Gimme Shelter and the London incidents.

The lyrics of the song almost seem to be written for the riots currently plaguing the London area. Its wierd how sometimes things come full circle. I was listening to a live version from the "No Security" release today and was thinking about the comparisons.

Gimme Shelter
(M. Jagger/K. Richards)

Oh, a storm is threat'ning
My very life today
If I don't get some shelter
Oh yeah, I'm gonna fade away

War, children, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
War, children, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away

Ooh, see the fire is sweepin' our very street today
Burns like a red coal carpet, mad bull lost its way

War, children, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
War, children, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away

Rape, murder!
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away

Rape, murder!
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away

Rape, murder!
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away

The floods is threat'ning my very life today
Gimme, gimme shelter, or I'm gonna fade away

War, children, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
I tell you love, sister, it's just a kiss away
It's just a kiss away
It's just a kiss away
It's just a kiss away
It's just a kiss away
Kiss away, kiss away

If the Stones wrote this song today about the riots, it would be a top 10 song. Maybe even reach number 1.

It probably would've been in 1969 too...if they'd released it as a single. Their most well-known album-only track perhaps (or is it SFTD).

Unfortunately SFTD lost it's album-only track status with it's single release in 1976, and then again in 2003(?).

Gimme Shelter was recorded in the 90s I believe by a group of artists including page 3 girl Sam Fox to raise funds for the Shelter charity. I think she also did a version of Gimme Shelter with Hawkwind.

Here's the Page 3 girl (fully clothed - sorry to disappoint you!)

Under My Thumb is another HUGE LP track, like Gimme Shelter.

SFTD was released as a single? Not properly though, as in, at the time when it would have made sense. Brown Sugar was released as a single in 1971, and then again in 1984 - only no one noticed the 1984 release. And I wouldn't count those SFTD remixes as being a single release in the true sense of the word. They did that with Don't Stop, a proper single release.

Well, the remix single also included the album version, as well as a faithful 5.1 remix of it. This makes Sympathy for the Devil their only song (and, I guess, one of the few overall) to be released in mono, stereo and 5.1 surround. Now, if only they'd finally release the mono mix digitally I'd be more than willing to shell out again! Are you listening, ABKCO? Release a new SACD with all three mixes and I'll buy it for sure.

Hmm... Come to think of it, wasn't there some site where you could suggest new SHM-SACD releases? That might be our best chance... But just to be sure I'm going to email ABKCO as well.

I don't disagree, I was just demonstrating that I was a man of wealth and taste.
