Not even close. Ones that are infinitely better:

Happy
Coming Down Again
Before They Make Me Run
You Got The Silver

Great tune and arrangement but I love to hear Keith sing with more power then to whisper

I like all Keith songs.I Think You Got the Silver, and Thief in the Night are tops, and Infamy is the only one I don't care for.

For me it marks Keith´s crossing over to the crooning side.
Therefore not my favourite. Good song, though.

No way!
There are many others - Tele posted some of them - that are better and more touching than How can I stop.Too contrived for me.

I'll add "Slipping Away" - just as poignant and a better-written song, imo. Keith's later ballads have kind of an unfinished quality that I don't care for.

Keith's ballads, latter-period ones mostly but "Coming Down Again" as well are more "atmospheric" than anything, there almost isn't any good melody to be found.

Every song he wrote up till 1980 beats How Can I Stop. If you want a great one after that try the spooked out 8.33 minute bootleg version of Thru and Thru. Now that's a classic.

I really like this...

...Keith's reggae songs (Too Rude, You Don't Have To Mean It) are generally more interesting to me than his ballads.

Tough question to answer. I like so many Keith songs. Impossible for me to say which one is the best ever

ALL ABOUT YOU

NOTHING MORE TO SAY!

Keith's best song ever is Gimme Shelter.

If you are talking about one he sang on, then Happy or You Got The Silver.

Great song. But, I'm partial to All About You.

One of his finest moments. This is the most intriguing Keith's contradiction, where contradiction means "richness" and diversity: a "wasted rocker" who can compose soulful ballads. Only who's got real talent can do that.

Most of my friends (some are musicians) respect the Stones but they´re not "fans"; I´m naturally interested in their opinion, since they provide me a more neutral point of view, and they are normally deeply impressed by "hate it when you leave". A lovely song indeed, but maybe it´s more than that, a proof of superior class, a white man capable of the warmth and magic that normally belongs to the black monsters of soul and r&b (in fact its atmosphere reminds me songs like Al Green's "Let´s stay together)

You Got the Silver
Happy
Can't Be Seen
Before They Make Me Run
Slipping Away

are considerably better

Wanna Hold You is better as well.

I agree, but Make No Mistake is a good one.

top ten yes, best no.

i prefer: all about you, you got the silver, happy, you dont move me, before tmmr, wanna hold you, sleep tonight.

Re: Is this Keith´s best song ever?

As a soul lover, I find Keith´s use of references absolutely stellar on How Can I Stop. The Wayne Shorter solo is mindblowing + I really dig the chorus.

I like most of Keith´s songs. Amongst the rockers I like BTMMR, Little T & A, Happy and Wanna Hold you (in that order), but they´re nowhere near as sophistically written or performed as How Can I Stop.

As Keith said when it was released: - With this we have broken new ground.

I agree with him.

Little T&A always does it for me. You Don't Have To Mean It, another cool one.

Love it, but it's not better than YGTS. That's probably his best. HCIS is certainly better than Coming Down Again though.'
