Question: Brown Sugar Studio Gear
Posted by: Cafaro ()

Hello all,
I am in the process of learning Brown Sugar (in open G) and I simply love the sound of the stusio version onSticky Fingers.

I am curious to learn what guitars, amps, and effects (if any) were used on this song. I realize that the Stones were mainly Gibson people (and Armstrong) and Ampeg but does anyone know what guitars were played and what amps were used? I'd love to spend the next few weeks trying to replicate that sound.

It will help me to define my own sound.

Thanks and I apologize if this has been covered before

I read somewhere that Keith used a black Gibson SG.

there's a very informative thread all about this listed in the Ratbag Boogie - let me find it ...
here you go: [www.iorr.org] - it starts out about the guitar, but gets into the gear in general,
and includes the interview where Jimmy Johnson (apparently mistakenly) recalls that Keith was playing a black SG
(black wasn't a normally-available colour for SGs in 1969, so more likely it was a dark red one, or not an SG)

>> did you mean Jimmy Miller? <<

nope! i mean Jimmy Johnson, the sound engineer at the Muscle Shoals sessions
there's a link to a fascinating interview with him in that other thread

That Jimmy Johnson article is excellent - can't open the link at work but from what I remember he says Keith's guitar was "definitely black with two cutaways" - which for that tour would be his 335/345/355 rather than an SG.

355

Johnson specifies pointy cutaways, but yeah: he's misremembering either the cutaways or the colour or both

and he was a guitar player. he's who suggested that Keith record a part in the bathroom...saying "it gives you a real shitty sound"
Keith loved it grinning smiley

I think that's in Booth's book...

sure you have! in the shots from the 1973 Nicaragua Benefit and Pacific Tour he's got a white SG
check the Ratbag Boogie - the thread's called Keith's Lesser-Known Gibsons or something like that

Keith maybe feels the same about SG's as many other players do.

They have a fantastic Rock n Roll sound, leaner and "throatier" than a LP...but the balance on a strap is terrible.
This might be one reason why he hasn't used them more often.

This neck heavy balance issue bugs some folks and not others. I can't deal with it and would never play an SG on stage for this reason.
The studio is a different matter because it perches on your knee just fine.

I played an SG today. You can get new Gibsons for 600-700 US. The store had a black 3 p/u version for only 725. It sounded amazing!
