About a week after my lovely bride and I got married in 2005, Donovan had a gallery opening for his Sapphographics (high contrast photographic featuring faces of nymphlike young women) at the Govinda Gallery in DC and appeared at the opening. A writer friend of ours later introduced us to Donovan and he gave our wedding his blessing. At the end of the opening, he pulled out an acoustic guitar and played a few songs in the front window. It was a pretty cool evening.
Donovan released some wonderful folk and pop records throughout the mid-late 60's. Catch The Wind, Mellow Yellow and Sunshine Supermaan are all favouriters -I especially like Jimmy Page's guitar-fills on the latter.
poor folk singer Donovan being upstaged by Dylan in Don't Look Back:
"i used to know a girl named Baby Blue" he says after Dylan's performance, but nobody cares. the look of bitter defeat on Donovan's face says it all. he got better later on:
Jesus Christ..that could be the greatest moment in rock history for me...Dylan singing Donovans 'To sing for you' in 'Don't Look Back', but it's not in the movie..you gotta have the boot...
