OT-Artists you like that make your friends question your sanity.
Date: April 15, 2011 02:40

In honour of the "Sacred Cows" thread. Who do you listen too that make your friends say "What the heck is that your listening too?".

For me -
Sex Pistols
Plasmatics
Wilko Johnson
L.A. Punk - pre '82
Mash-Up Mixes - I'm just nutz about these.
and yes, I've got some friends that question my sanity about my love of The Stones.

Go at it my friends.

Scotty,
Irvine, CA

Well, I like the Eagles, there I said it.
I could fill an entire thread on all the old stuff I like that Im not supposed to, but on to more current artists:

Coldplay (I don't get the animosity)
John Mayer (good songwriter and great musician)
I like pop.

The "mad music" of the one and only Ian Dury & the Blockheads..................

(spoken)
Morning Reg, meat and two veg? He done him with a ten-pound sledge, he done himself a favour Crash!

Forty-year old housewife Mrs Elizabeth Walk of Lambeth Walk
Had a husband who was jubblified with only half a stalk
So she had a Milk of Magnesia and curry powder sandwich, half a pound of uncut pork
Took an overdose of Omo, this made the neighbours talk

(spoken)
Could have been watching Frankie Vaughn on the telly and giving herself a scratch

(Chorus)
This is what we find (x 4)
A sense of humour is required, amongst the bacon rind

(spoken)
Hello Brian, wash and iron? Try it on, it's only nylon

Single batchelor with little dog Tony Green of Turnham Green
Said 'who's a clever boy then girl, now you know whom I mean'
For the mongrel laid a cable in the sandpit of the playground of the park where they had been
And with a lttle bit of tissue, he wiped its bumhole clean

(spoken)
A bit of claggy on the waggy

(Chorus)
This is what we find (x4)
They must have had a funny time, on the Golden Hind

(spoken, reverb)
O vanitas vanitatum, which of us is happy in his life
Which of us has our desire, or having it, is gratified

(spoken)
Hello Mrs Wood, this boy looks familiar, they used to call him Robin Hood.
Now he's Robin @#$%& shit @#$%&

Home improvement expert Harold Hill of Harold Hill
Of Do-It-Yourself dexterity, and double glazing skill
Came home to find another gentleman's kippers in the grill
So he sanded off his winkle with his Black and Decker drill

(Chorus)
This is what we find (x4)
The hope that springs eternal, springs right up your behind!
This is what we find (repeat to fade)

& of course the Rolling Stones............due to the cupboards full of live shows

Well, everytime I try to discuss the Fugs or Tuli Kupferberg here at IORR I will not get any response... I have made my own conclusions of that grinning smiley.... But, let's try once again:

Are we talking mainstream here? If so, maybe a generous dose early Neubauten will do the trick? Sun Ra and other free-form, experimental jazz? Some Schönberg? Stockhausen? John Cage?

Otherwise in general genres/scenes such as tape-/noise-music and sound-collage should be recommended (somtimes quite adventurous/torturous) listening.

And, by the way: Syd Barrett, whom I myself adore, is of course in most situations not by a far cry strange and challenging enough (despite a few, should we say, more erratic/illogical elements concerning slightly unconventional chord-structure and surprising compositional aspects). I have in fact several positive experiences introducing people to the world of Barrett. Some electronic (synth-)music can, however, sometimes at least border on the offensive and exhausting: we are talking about the more harsh expressions of electronic body music, aggrotech, etc.

If my memory serves, isn't that the guy who recorded an album on the pavement/sidewalk outside a studio in LA because they wouldn't let him in....or is that a myth..........

If you crank up the volume to 11 on "Merry Go Round" late at night you'd probably attract as many mental health/social workers as you would cops...
