Semi OT: Old bluesmen still alive
Posted by: stones78 ()
Date: April 1, 2011 22:28

I know that Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Otis Rush, Jody Williams, Matt Murphy, David Honeboy Edwards are still alive and they still play.
Anybody knows if there any more blues musicians from the 50's or earlier still living?
Thanks.

Yes, sadly I think these are the only ones, curiously they're all guitar players.

Great. Didn't know James Cotton was still alive.

had throat cancer a few years back and he can't sing much, but his harp playing is still pretty impressive.

B.B King is a fair lot older than most of those guys mentioned -- he's my dad's age! Actually Bill Wyman is right there with Guy, Cotton and the like.

and besides - he's white. and... really white. like - totally. he's the whitest blues player in history :-)

he's not one of those original black @#$%&, sorry - but a great musician, of course!

Otis Rush had a pretty bad stroke about five or six years ago and can no longer play. It was a treat to have him and Buddy Guy just three hundred miles away in Chicago.

That comment is a bit over the top there son. Johnny did play in the 50's, slicked back hair and all.

Also Bobby 'Blue' Bland.
And a couple more: Little Willie Littlefield, and Eddie Shaw, who played with Muddy.

eddie led the wolf gang, wolf's band, after the wolf died. eddie's not played in public in years, i believe.

Another Hey CBII,

Any chance of ever bringing your father on for a brief chat with us here?

If any of you find yourself in Chicago you can't go wrong seeing Jimmy Burns. His sound is authentic, he's never over the top, and relative to this thread he's in his mid-to-late sixties...

...Louisiana Red?!
(born in the very early '30s, but no album release until the early '60s... Still: an 'original' to me.)

didn't mean to offend anyone!
've just read Johnny's bio more closely - indeed he had a band in 1959, sorry for a mistake! on the other hand, most people think his career started in 1968 - in a similar manner that Keith's started in 1962, not late 50s.
