The audience may actually be older than Chuck down there.

I've seen some recent video's on youtube - I love Chuck but he is reminding me of Muhammad Ali he just can't retire. No disrespect but I don't want to see him like that. I remember my last image of Willie Mays fakking down in the 1973 World Series and I don't want to remember Chuck like that.

I have mixed feelings over this. Reading the post on Phil Collins announcing his retirement from music, part of me wishes others would have the sense to know when to call it a day, but on the other hand if people are still enjoying his concerts & (perhaps more importantly) Chuck still enjoys performing then why shouldn't he carry on? No-one's forcing us to go & see them of course (I'm a big Jerry Lee Lewis fan, having seen him 36 times from 1980 to 2008, but the last 2 or times I saw him were so disappointing to me that I've decided just to remember the good times & not bother going to his concerts any more).

I certainly don't believe all that stuff about artists ruining their legacy by carrying on past their prime. In 10, 20 or 50 years time Chuck Berry will be remembered for all those wonderful records he made in the 50s & 60s rather than the concerts he did in the 90s & noughties.

I've seen him 2x in the past year and highly recommend seeing him- I also saw him on a bill with the B52s and the Clash at the Hollywood Palladium in the 80s, and while he obviously isnt the same cat, he is worth seeing and ticket prices were reasonable. CBII and his sister and the band is tight, but not sure if they play road gigs with Chuck...

I'd still see Chuck too. I've seen him 4 times (all in London): 1980, 1998, 2000 & 2004. Last time I saw him he was sloppy but still very entertaining (as Keith as pointed out, Chuck has such incredible charisma that he can get away with it).

Here's some great rare footage of Chuck performing 4 songs live in Paris in 1965 (which I just uploaded myself to YouTube)...

How ironic that music that was made for teenagers can't actually be seen by teenagers anymore... confused smiley

Sleepy, I've seen more shows of him than most but I must say, that guitar solo during Wee, Wee Hours was breathtaking!

I don't think he's going to stop playing. It's entirely too much of a thrill for him. As long as there's a demand for him, he WILL be on stage.

We do travel with him but many of the promoters in the USA don't have the sense to book the Saint Louis band as sidemen. It's a force to be reckoned with. Seems like the European promoters have a bit more sense and have the same line up for 90% of the shows.
