I've been hearing for years how the outtakes are far better than the Voodoo Lounge album, but I've never heard any of them. Enlighten me. What's the best cd for these outtakes. I love the official album. It's a favorite among my age group along with Bridges to Babylon.
all this Voodoo Lounge stuff is fascinating and beautiful - especially the glimpses it gives us of the creative process - but i've never heard anyone say it's "better than the official release". people do say that about the Dirty Work demos/outtakes ...

Some pretty good songs left off the album that were, well, let's just say the album has some lumps of shit on it that easily could have been dealt with had someone decided to go with the good songs and not the lame songs.
But why even suggest that? It's not like Jagger hasn't done entire solo albums like that.
Thanks for posting, skipstone. I once passed up the Voodoo Brew LP set at a store, many years ago, because it was so pricey. I've always wondered what I missed out on. If there's a lot more like that, I'd love to hear it all. I'm guessing the bass sounds a bit thuddy because it's probably not DJ playing, but KR or RW or studio personnel instead (?).
It's mostly rough mixes on those boots of the Voodoo leaks. There are, I think, some final mixes but minus compression, editing, mastering, etc. It all sounds very flat.
I bought Voodoo Stew when it came out in '95. It was stamped $125, but I talked the guy down to $118 or something including tax, because that was all the money I had. I have never regretted that purchase. Still listen to Ronnie and Keith attempt vocal overdubs on "You Got it Made" for a laugh to this day. My friends and I had the sh#t memorized.
"Keith Richards' Voodoo Lounge" is a favourite disc of mine. Really cool hearing him feeling out the vocals on the tracks that Mick would go on to sing.
I think Keith contributed a lot to this album, as if you listen to the demos, most of them have him on vocals!
What really was a revelation for me was the fact that the track 'Moon Is Up' was actually written by Keith. There's an outtake on one of these sets where he 'introduces' the song something like this: "This is a song I wrote called 'If'" ('If' obviously being a working title for the song)
Up to then I always assumed it was a 'Mick' song. One of my favorite songs on the album.......
