Thats been said a few times, but not in this context.

Didnt actually notice that. Was 'Swordfishtrombones' the first one on Island?

'Rain Dogs' and 'Heartattack and Vine' are my 2 favourite Waits albums. The late 70s - mid 80s' era is tops for me.

I love some of his early stuff, but I think he came into his own when he stopped playing the drunk piano man character and developed his own true style - the Island years, Swordfish, Rain Dogs, Mule and Real Gone, though admittedly he tests my patience with some of his sideways travel into the world of Berchtold Brecht, etc.

Can I add "Hang Down Your Head" and "Downtown Train" (covered by Rod, I believe)?

Swordfishtrombones was recorded for Asylum, but they rejected the album, so Waits took it to Island. So, yes, it was the first Island album.

I love all of Waits' stuff. My favourite era runs from Blue Valentine through to Bone Machine inclusive. I found Mule Variations a bit overrated, like both Alice and Blood Money, but the most recent masterpiece is Real Gone. Stunning, stunning album that.

naming my top 5 tom waits songs is too difficult (though "train song" and
"innocent when you dream" would be on that list, for sure) so i'd rather just say how lucky i feel to have seen him in concert, considering he hardly performs live. it was a very memorable night for me,

Not good enough Bernie. Come on, do be a wuss. grinning smiley I have trouble compiling a Waits Top 50. Always wind up with 57/58 of his songs - and that's not including the bubbling-unders.

I've seen him twice. Hammersmith Odeon 1987 and 2004. So good it hurt. Really wanted to see him in Edinburgh, but family commitments got in the way. I think Gazza went ... and rubbed it in our faces. The swine!

hoist that rag (ribot's guitar solo!)
dirt in the ground
take care of all my children
sins of the father
diamonds and gold

it's a testimony to the man's greatness that I could list five songs not mentioned above

I saw two "Real Gone" shows in Amsterdam and one in Seattle. He opened with "Make It Rain" and "Hoist That Rag" and also did "Sins of the Father". Ribot was with him. Absolutely f'n brilliant!

I can imagine. I have a video of a gig in Berlin from the same tour with a great, reggae-esque version of Sins of the Father.
