Hopefully the album will be great. This song is pedestrian at best.

Holds grudges? In what way? Doesn't want to play with previous bandmates?

Please elaborate

He pretty much destroyed "The Band" - the rest of them all hate/hated him

Agreed but that was his intention.. felt that The Band ran its course; he was the driving force and he lost his desire

i don't see that as a grudge; artistic entitlement is more like it..

Mmm...no, he didn't. He simply left the group. I agree with Levon Helm's view of The Last Waltz, but he did not "destroy" The Band. They carried on without him for many years.

robbie's leaving the band was even a worse blow that MT's leaving the stones, imo. we got those two VERY spotty records from robbie at the beginning and then pretty much NADA since. one of my fave guitarists ever...i just hope there's some evidence of his brilliant axework on the new record...

ummmm....you can't disagree with a fact. they did carry on without him, and even after richard died....it wasn't until ricky passed away that they finally formally folded the Band....

robbie's song-writing and guitar work were missed, but the spirit of the band continued after he left...and for my money, those golden voices were the essence of the band....in that sense, losing richard was an even bigger blow....

Agreed but the story is for some reason there was Robbie vs the rest of the Band which is too bad

Mind your beeswax
And yes, I DO hold a grudge as they were a great, great band and he blew it up because of his huge ego which is a shame.

now go get your drink of milk and calm down sonny

So what do you mean? He should have stayed in The Band forever? He wanted to leave and he left. The group ran its course. He didn't "disintegrate" the band, he didn't forbid the other members to get together and make music without him, he just wasn't interested anymore.

well, just look at the last waltz - if you didn't know any better, you'd swear the name of the act was the Robbie Robertson Band.....like you said, quite the ego....it became quite evident in subsequent years, that he needed his bandmates much more than they needed him....

The Band were around for a long time. even before they were "The Band", as many of you know. and they made some great records. that's all that matters. if they had released one album with one hit song on it and then robbie left to pursue a solo career and flopped, i can see how one can be upset.

It's a shame that Levon & Robbie don't speak to each other anymore, they had like a telepathic connection when they played, at their peak they were up there with The Beatles & The Stones...but I'm glad that Robbie and Levon keep doing great music, I read somewhere that Robbie was working on his autobiography too.

Actually, I'd say it's Levon who holds the grudge, not Robbie. I read Levon's book; methinks he tried to give himself a bit too much credit for The Band in there. How many songs has Levon Helm written? Not too many- I'm sure if he had even a hint of the songwriting talent Robbie Robertson and Richard Manuel had he would have gotten a few tunes on those albums. After all, he walked out on Dylan's 1966 tour because he was too thin-skinned to handle the criticisms...and never returned to the fold until lured in by the siren song of money once The Band got their own record contract. I love Levon Helm's drumming but he tends to come across as a bitter greedhead and glory hog. YMMV, of course. Robbie Robertson worked his backside off, and deserves the credit. Bottom line: though Robertson was no saint back in the day either, he got tired of being denmother to Richard, Levon and Rick (Garth Hudson could hold his own; The Band would not be The Band without Garth) and so he folded the band, simple as that. Robbie knew that if they'd've carried on something bad would have happened, and sure enough in 1986 it did in the form of Levon and Rick finding Richard Manuel hanging from his shower curtain rod whilst on tour. If not for The Last Waltz it could have easily been in 1979 or something and Robbie himself making the grisly discovery.

In the end it's too bad- for years one of my dream projects has been Dylan, Robbie, Garth and Levon getting back together for an album. I get the feeling the obstacle there is Levon Helm, not Robbie Robertson. Oh well, they are who they are.

That new tune of Robbie's doesn't sound too bad, by the way, but the man still can't sing to save his life...damn good picker though, always been one of my favourite guitarists.
