It's a veryy good book; very well worth grabbing. One can often find a copy for a reasonable price at ebay. Great pictures too

I got this book as a birthday present from my friends around 1975/76 and I loved it and still do.
Loads of excellent and back then rare pictures in it.

Was Dalton's book a kind of first 'serious' attempt to write a book about the Stones, even though it is based on individual articles? It is published during their creative peak (71?) - when everything still sounded so current and no nostalgy yet - so it is also valuable in capturing the perspective of the time. A nice 'vibe' in it. I remember it talking about the 'mid'period of the Stones - referring to AFTERMATH and BETWEEN THE BUTTONS, etc. (Wasn't there also a kind of fiction article if the Stones would have performed in 1968????)

I got the book from my local library in the early 80's and I remember reading it very carefully (it might have been the first Stones book I read - or tried to read with my English at the time grinning smiley). I haven't seen the book ever since - so my memories are quite hazy and vague now... I should get the book hands again.

First of the great Stones books and still one of the best.

Great book.
A friend brought it home from his first US trip in early 70's.
It's always been one of my fave Stones books!
Unfortunately mine fell apart too many years ago.

Yes, it does, and if I remember right, even "CS Blues" was on it. At least I remember seeing the song first written on the paper, before actually hearing it...

thanks for this thread--I've long had The First 20 Years and thought that was what people were referring to when they mentioned Dalton. I didn't realize he'd done another one previously! Will have to track it down. First 20 Years is one of my main sources... somewhat out of date now, I suppose.

Hey, cc, could you please shoot me an email? It's no big thing, but there's something I ought to tell you - and I only have your old email address (which there appears to be something strange with)

A fabulous book. One of the most essential from that era, along with Roy Carr's 'Illustrated Record'. I remember chuckling at the title when I got it, 'The First Twenty Years' and thinking 'he's a bit optimistic!'

I didnt realise Dalton's first book was so old. I have a copy in what I think is still very good condition in my attic. Havent read it in ages.

that's my other source! Good to know they haven't been supplanted by things like According to the Stones.
